As worn as our 472 may have been, it was still a 472. After thinking it over for a few moments, I chose the '67. It was on.\n\nThe main drag of our Kansas town was four lanes wide and straight. There were a few hills, but nothing serious. We wheeled the Cadillacs out of the shop's parking lot, lined them up in the middle of the road, and hit it.\n\nPredictably, the 472 got the jump of almost a (Cadillac) car length. But the '67 could wind better and to a higher RPM so I was soon gaining ground. By sheer luck, nobody else was traveling our direction as we headed the five or so miles home.\n\nWe were doing well over 100 MPH in a 50 MPH zone when we crested a hill and saw a cop coming the other way. Dad and I took a (very quick) look at one another and held our accelerator pedals to the floor. If the cop noticed us, he made no indication that we were doing anything wrong. :-)\n\nBy the time we got to our intersection (where we had to turn right and then immediately right again to pull into our home parking lot), I was a Cadillac-length ahead, congratulating myself on the wisdom of picking the '67.\n\nBut there was a gas station at the intersection. There were no cars at any of the pumps so Dad blasted the '68 through the station, and put the convertible sideways across the two-lane entry, cutting me off as I (properly if screech-ily ) rounded the corner of the intersection.\n\nAs I slammed on the brakes, missing him by an inch or two, he fishtailed into our parking lot for the \"win.\" I complained that I had run the \"pure\" race but Dad wouldn't have it. But because of that show those Continental convertibles were going through the roof so he got the Deville convertible instead. He seemed to have much fun in driving around San Diego with his friends at the time. He took very good care of it keeping as nice as possible. His friends were impressed. He bought it for fun and he seemed to get his money's worth. If you are in your mid-to-late 20's and have plenty of friends and in a California coastal town, I say buy this one. I doubt there is no other convertible cruiser that you can have this much fun for in the $10k range. Every single guy especially in California needs a classic American 60's convertible before they get to wrapped up to enjoy it. I certainly had one.
