The turbo model was exceptional for Datsun and Nissan between 1981 and 1983. If you had a turbo model between those years you were rewarded with the Borg Warner T5 transmission instead of the standard Nissan five speed transmission in the non-turbo models. They were bulletproof and identical to what was available in the Fox Body Mustangs, Capris and Camaros. The turbo models also benefited from a larger driveshaft and axles in the back. The biggest flaw and complaint that I have about the vehicle is how weak the rear suspension was. From a dead stop if you attempted to launch the vehicle from 3000 RPM, the rear springs with compress and the suspension with slam against the body. Thankfully there are fixtures available like a much stronger and stiffer rear sway bar, heavier duty springs and Takico Ilumina shocks and struts. There is an All-Z motorsport company in Orange California that specializes in these vehicles and you can even get a 3.3 L stroker kit for the engine that was originally available through Nissan motorsport several years ago. Once a year they hold a show in Orange County California where 300 to 400 Nissan and Datsun vehicles show up. It\u2019s one of the best events where you can see as many of these cars as your heart desires. We own a 1982 280ZX and there's no way we would part with it. My wife got it as a HS graduation gift when it only had 6 miles on it. She quit driving it about the time we started having children. It sat in our barn for about 18 years. Rats managed to destroy the interior, tires were flat, and it was a real mess. When our second son was about 15, he asked if he could drive it if he could get it started. We said sure..go right ahead. It had not been started or driven in 18 years! In less than a month, he called us out to the barn and started it for us. The paint looked great after he washed it, but that was about it. We had a flatbed wrecker pick it up and take it to a mechanic. After spending about $1,100 for a new battery, belts, brakes, plugs, wires, rotor and tires, it ran great. Everything worked, including the little lady inside that would occasionally tell us our door was ajar or to fasten our seat belts. After the seat cushions were replaced, new leather and carpet was put down, the interior was much better. Our son sure did enjoy taking off the T-tops and driving it to school over the next couple of years! Almost 2 years later we drove away in it on our honeymoon. In the early 90s when were broke with 3 kids and he was in medical school it went to a garage to be worked on and restored. after a month we went to check on it and the garage was shut down and cars sent to scrape.
