Fluid looked full, doesn\u2019t seem to be a leak, could need to be flushed and generally serviced and be as simple as that, or could be something like master cylinder, etc. Brake pads are fine and don\u2019t have much wear. However from the collector standpoint, I would hold off for a USSR made one (pre 1992), or, alternatively, wait for a 1.7 FI one which is probably a 1997+, somebody correct me if i\u2019m wrong here. Don\u2019t get me wrong 1.6 Carbureted is the most powerful Lada ever made in that vintage, but 1.7 FI is much more advanced. Also do make sure that the one you get has a 5-speed trans in it, vs. the 4-spd one, as that extra OD gear makes all the difference on the modern highways of today. When we left the country in June 1990 we sold it to a colleague of hers. As the new owner would be out of Kuwait for summer holidays we arranged to store it out of the sun, in the lowest level of a parking garage near where we lived. \r\nOn August 2 Saddam Hussein's army invaded. The parking garage took stray shells intended for the nearby electricity ministry building and a military camp across the road. The Niva had its back window shattered but was otherwise drivable.\r\nAn American family who were friends of the new owner were in hiding during the occupation and cooked up a plan to escape. They disguised themselves as Arabs, got the key to the Niva from the new owner's apartment, made their way to the partly-destroyed parking garage, got the Niva running, and drove it straight across the desert into Saudi Arabia, eventually to Riyadh and safety.\r\nI've been hoping to find another one every since. Any car that can survive Iraqi shelling and the Saudi desert and remain drivable has something going for it. Would have loved to have this one, but the rubles needed to ship it to the Midwest made it a bit too dear.
