It is a very cool feature of this model.\r\n\r\nSince we are on the topic of cool features, here are a few more: Hydraulic clutch, hydro-boost power brakes, front disc brakes (I think the 4 wheel drum description might be wrong. I've never seen one with power, 4 wheel drums. It also has the 14\u201d wheels. The 1966 cars were 4 wheel drum and had 13\u201d wheels), locking fuel door behind rear license plate holder, 3 point front seat belts, reclining bucket seats, doors that won\u2019t lock without the key (if you close the door with the handle in the locked position, it unlocks automatically) and probably a few more things I'm not remembering. Some of these features might not sound very fancy but they are pretty advance for 1967.\r\n\r\nWhy were they not more popular? They were very expensive for a Japanese car at the time. I don\u2019t remember what MSRP was but my father bought it in 1968 for $1000. The dealer was stuck with it and wanted it gone. I still have the bill of sale. Also, they were grossly underpowered. The 2300 and 4 speed was a popular combo in Japan but couldn\u2019t handle the US highways. 60-65mph is about it unless you want the motor screaming at you. Someone most likely disconnected at the wheel and manually released the brake. \r\n\r\nAs for the Kar Kit, this wasn't a Toyota item. This is what I found on the web: \"Kar-Kit was a NOX reduction scheme used in CA in the 70's. (I used to install them back then). Anyway, a Kar-Kit plugged the vacuum advance lines to the carb and distributor and retarded the timing. Crown-Classics dot com has helped me in the past. They are Moon-Eyes and the owner, Shige is a big Crown fan. My Father and I had the pleasure of meeting him at a Toyota car show in So-Cal years ago. He shipped us a few parts we were looking for that he happened to have in Japan. He even refused payment, stating that he was happy to help keep our car on the road!\r\n\r\nThe website shows a few parts available. This is a 40 series so check out the parts under the '40' menu (the site is mostly in Japanese.) More recently, they helped me find a few parts that were not listed on the site. I corresponded with a very nice person via email. They connected me with a Crown enthusiast in Australia that had the parts. \r\n\r\nRockauto is also a good resource. If they don't list it, it most likely isn't an available part. Also, Ebay has had a few random parts occasionally. I bought NOS front and rear window weatherstripping from someone in the Philippines. \r\n\r\nThis car can definitely be made drivable again. The brakes and carburetor are the biggest issue. I ran a Weber for years but always struggled with cold starts. I ended up installing a Holley Sniper fuel injection system. I used the single barrel setup they sell for straight-6 Mustangs. It has been 100% reliable ever since. \r\n\r\nFor brakes, the biggest issue is the brake booster. I had a local shop rebuild and tinker with it a few times. It worked ok for a while but would eventually start leaking down to no pedal. It uses a single master that operates the remote booster (right fender well.) The booster splits it into front and rear circuits. I deleted the whole operation. I used a 7/8\" Wilwood master (same firewall bolt pattern) and updated front and rear brakes. Front is Wilwood 1964 Ford Falcon discs and rear is Summit Racing 8\" Ford rearend generic disc setup. I think it's based on Explorer. I used Ford stuff because the wheel bolt pattern is the same at 4x114.3mm.\r\n\r\nI know ours isn't original, but it is safe and reliable. And to the average person looking at it, it looks original. I even used the original air cleaner housing on the fuel injection. Keep it original and parked or be creative and make it drivable. It's your choice.
