In order to take over a country, one needs to own the pullman model.\r\n\r\nHaving owned an M100 6.9 and assisted a friend with a 300SEL 6.3, the thing that scares me about this auction is that there is an issue with the air suspension. My friend's 6.3 appeared to have a \"small leak somewhere\" in that it the car would settle to the bump stops if he didn't drive it for a few days. The local MB shop expert diagnosed it as the air pump seals and replaced the pump. After doing that, they figured out that debris from the pump seals went through the system. Height control valves needed replacement due to the debris, as the car (from the time the friend bought it) always rode high. It was noted that the air bags which support the car showed deep age cracks due to a 10 year layup in the garage and were replaced as a precaution. 20 years ago, these repairs were over $10k. \r\n\r\nNothing in the M100 world is cheap, but my friend enjoyed his 6.3 immensely, as much as I enjoyed the 6.9. This horn is supposed to sound at all times along with two electric horns mounted on the left and right side under the front bumpers....slightly set back. These three horns are the \"normal\" setting on a 600. In the middle, under the front bumper, there is a 4th horn referred to as the \"Supertone\" horn. As its name suggests, it adds another tone to the three other normal horns. It can be switched on and off with a rocker switch on the dash right above the steering column. This Supertone horn is often damaged and ripped off due to how low it hangs and is rarely replaced. If the air horn isn't working, then the electro-pneumatic switch valve is likely dirty or out of adjustment, and in more dire cases the brass sounding plates in the air horn can be corroded/stuck. The air horn that a 600 uses is made by Bosch, as are the electric ones. This particular air horn was also used on various trucks, boats, and trains in Europe. However, there is noting in this world that sounds like the combination of horns that a 600 has. When I purchased mine I drove it 500 miles to my home. It has a 35 gallon gas tank and at highway speeds get 8 miles to the gallon. Throughout the '80s, many 600s were being armored and sent to customers in the Middle East. Prior to their shipment, our shop was charged with thoroughly evaluating and repairing any issues we might find. Over the years, we became well acquainted with the cars, their quirks, and how to repair them. We were informed 'the people buying these cars have marble floors in their garage - it can't leak a drop'. Making a 600 'leak-free' is no small task. As such, we developed our own 18 page check-list that we used when evaluating each car. If any serious prospective purchaser would be interested in obtaining this check-list, I'll see what I can do about scanning it and emailing it. \r\n\r\nWe don't see too many 600s today. However, there's still one we service regularly. It's a '72 with just 29k original miles. The original owner was Wayne Newton (for whatever that's worth). Another interesting note, it's the car featured in the opening credits of Falcon Crest. It's a wonderful car that's never been restored and maintained by our shop for over 30 years. We've seen a lot of great cars over the years but it has got to be one of my all time favorites. \r\n\r\nAs to this car, the $22k is just the tip of the iceberg. And then, there are Legendary Cars. And then, there is the Mercedes-Benz 600 SWB Sedan. This is THE Ultimate MB in it's time. Yes, there was the Pullman. But these were owned by all of THE People of Note. Many were infamous. I have always liked the proportions of the SWB. If you question this car's status, just look at the specs. A V-8 putting out 300HP and 438 FLBS of torque. In 1969! Twin caliper front disc brakes. The over engineering in this car was the BEST that MB was producing. And they matched it with a luxurious interior. This car, I believe, is as close as MB came to matching the Pre-War 500/540K Cabriolet A/B's. I read an article once by Paul Russell, saying there was no way to build a 540K in today's world. Cost, engineering, and execution would make it impossible to do so. I would say, the 600 SWB is that car. As has been well mentioned, and well known, these are some of the most difficult, and expensive cars in the world to take care of. I would argue though, they are worth it. There are not many out there. There is nothing else like them. All of them need to be saved. Because, just like a 540K, they will someday be one of the Classic Mercedes-Benz cars to have. It's not far from that now. While this one has been stored a long time, and it's perishable's will need replacing, it's not a rusted out, ignored, cast off. Yes, VERY serious money.
