The PO, who understood this problem well, had to have a special long drill bit made expressly for the purpose of enlarging the holes in the carb bodies to accept a larger shaft. The net result (along with a very well-done engine build, of course) is that the car always starts, idles, and runs perfectly. The judges were quite amazed that it was an unrestored car, with one judge making the memorable comment, \"It's a rolling conundrum.\" I added the pics in particular because this was a much more recent event than the others described: The car's only gone about a thousand miles since then (we trailered it there and back). The last two photos are from the 2010 Colorado Grand. The Spider wasn't entered in the event, but joined the caravan for a couple days to enjoy the Colorado high country in the company of good friends (and their cars). One of the pics is at the summit of Independence Pass--12,095' above sea level. The car ran perfectly even at altitude. Pinion seal is not leaking, so the minor seepage noted should be gone. Also looked at the fuel gauge and determined the problem is in the gauge itself: Sender is fine and \"Fuel Reserve\" light in the dash works. I can R&R the gauge and send it out for rebuild if time permits before delivery, or provide a credit. Along the way, he gets the chrome bug and starts improving certain things, maybe even redoing bumpers and trim that don't measure up. The dominoes fall, and soon the top frame is painted semi-gloss and a new top scheduled.\n\nDoing the best job possible, this guy strips the dash for paint, removing instruments and trim. Being a bit of a fuss-budget. Everything is bagged, labeled and organized in coffee cans (never cardboard). The body is sanded and painted. Experiments are made with black wrinkle paint. And, then it sits in jack stands curing.\n\nNow, here is the fork-in-the-road for these kind of projects.\n\nWith luck, he is dogged and the slow, careful reassembly of the freshly painted car proceeds in an orderly, relentless way. That way, the car is back on the road in 1964. However, it is all too common for something to halt progress. Maybe it is money, a divorce, illness, or just plain ennui. The lacquer is so smooth and uniform, compared to most any modern enamel paint. It's held up remarkably well on this car, due to being always garaged and consistent waxing to keep it protected. I didn't have time to include it in the photos, but I have three quart cans of the red lacquer paint from 1962 should any touch-up be required. None of the cans have been opened since then. One of the paint cans is of a style I've never seen before, like a spout-top metal beer can from the 1930's, if you've seen one of those (made that way to be compatible with bottling lines at the time before flat-top cans came into common usage). I have no idea how old it is, but it's another interesting part of the car's history. I owned this exact car (though a model-year 1958) in the early to mid'80s and it was an absolute jewel. Certainly bigger, faster, more expensive cars have followed but I don't think I ever have/had as much fun with any of them as I did with my Giulietta. I think I sold it for $7,500. Let's face it, this is Alfa's semi-affordable, pint-sized version of a $15M Ferrari 250GT SWB California Spider. Absolute great car and I can only wish the buyer half as much fun with this one as I had with mine.
