It was 302-2V powered. Hers was a chestnut brown, with a brown/tan bucket seat interior, brown vinyl top and..... (wait for it).... brown color keyed wheel covers.\nDad would always cuss the spark plugs since they were so difficult to access. It was also rust prone. I think my dad commissioned at least two fiberglass rust repairs to the lower quarter panels.\nWe were a family of five, and on the rare occasion when we'd all pile in to the Maverick (rather than the Fury Custom Suburban or Gran Torino Squire), there'd be a fight over who'd have to ride on the \"hump\" in the middle of the back seat. As the youngest/smallest, that privilege usually fell to me.\nIt was traded in 1982 (for an even more brown 79 Cutlass Supreme), a few years before I got my license, but my older brother chauffeured me around in it frequently. It did pretty good one-wheel peels.... in gravel.\nOne other memory I have while riding with my brother is getting in a minor fender bender with it while en route to St. Louis Blues hockey game at the Checkerdome. Timely.\n\nFord never offered a true performance version of the Maverick. The LoPo 302-2V was the top engine option, even on the \"Grabber\" sporty trim option. Suspension deficiencies in the corners, if any, should be easy to correct. I worked corners at a vintage race in Pueblo last weekend. Ninety-one degrees and cloudless on Saturday, because it's Pueblo. Then overcast and in the 40s and 50s through noon on Sunday, because it's Colorado. In the surprisingly sizeable Big Bore group was a Mercury Comet version of the Maverick. A beautiful car in a slightly darker red than this one, it was a solid mid-pack runner. The owner seemed to invest more in the handling than the horsepower, so it wasn't threatening the real GT350s, etc. But it was quick, reliable, beautifully done, and probably had a much lower all-in cost than the Mustangs. And it was different. We need more different on the track and the street.\r\n\r\nMy sister had a turd brown, mid-70s Comet. The bench seat in that one was one of the most painful torture devices I've ever encountered. I had early Mustang seats in my Econoline, same as in this car, and that one was driven from Maine to Colorado and back with no pain.\r\n\r\nAgain, very tastefully done Maverick. IMO it was Ford's best looking car in the 70's as the Mustang had started to get too big and boxy and their larger cars were way too bloated. The Pinto looked good too but the Maverick, the two door in particular looked so fantastic. What was so perplexing was that they marketed it as the ultimate no frills car. I remember the ad's saying basically that it was so plain that nothing was in it that could break and if it did you could fix it with a screwdriver. \r\n\r\nI would have really loved to have seen a real high end version of these where those beautiful tunneled gauge pods were filled with a 120mph speedometer and a tach. And some real performance upgrades, some BOSS or GT badges and stripes and a proper interior with quality buckets and a console. Pretty much what Ford \"should\" have done with the car to begin with. As I recall this was Ford's idea for a small, family size, affordable peoples' car. \n\nIn one of my sales jobs 25 or 30 years ago I had a co-worker, Mike, that worked as at a Ford dealership in the late 60's and early 70's somewhere in Kansas City. When the Maverick first was introduced the dealership had to sell it so cheap that they only gave a flat $50.00 commission. Mike said that the first time a couple came in wanting a Maverick none of the other floor sales guys wanted to mess with them because of the low commission. Mike said he thought \"what the heck\" and he was last in line for an \"up\" that day, so, why not. It took him 45 minutes to write the deal. He decided that it was an easy 50 and told all of those other sales guys that he would take all of the Maverick customers and they could have his turns in the normal sales queue. Turned out to be a great deal for him that year and the next as he made a good income and was awarded a regional top salesman award and a nice bonus.\n\nLike or dislike the original these hotted up builds are just what is needed to make the car a winner. Maverick \"Sprint\" back in the late '70s. Shiny bronze metallic paint, bucket seats with a floor shifter and ribbed stainless trim pieces on the rocker panels with raised red \"Sprint\" lettering.\r\nI really loved the look of that car. Quite up-market compared to all the other low-rent Mavericks out there at the time.\r\n\r\nI guess the buckets, floor shifter & shiny trim were what made it a \"Sprint\" - - because it sure couldn't Sprint down the road. 6 cylinder engine and 2-speed automatic pretty much assured that no sprinting would be allowed. We used to say the car had a 2 speed \"schizophrenic\" transmission because it could never decide what gear it should be in and often randomly switched between first and second gears on a whim.\r\n\r\nAcceleration was surprisingly brisk... until about 15mph. An abrupt shift into 2nd gear brought a halt to the any further progress. Flooring the throttle pedal on the highway to pass another slower moving vehicle was always dramatic and quite hilarious. The trans would (after a long pause while it considered whether this was a good idea or not) shift down its one gear, the 6 cyl. engine would roar and scream until it decided it had had enough whereupon it would make an extremely jerky shift back into its only other (top) gear. All this cacophony and mechanical torture accomplished absolutely no increase in velocity at all. I eventually realized that passing anything faster than a riding lawnmower was ill advised.\r\n\r\nI do associate a lot of good memories with that Maverick Sprint although none of them involve the actual driving experience. I eventually traded it even-steven for a '74 (?) Ford Courier pickup... Mistake!
