All of the inportant mechanicals have been serviced to make her reliable. She has new wheel cylinders in the rear and vented disc brakes up front. The brake flex lines replaced too. She has a new quibo on the driveshaft. The rear axles have new boots. The transmission has new seals and a new shift bushing. The drivers side motor mount has been replaced. She has new plugs, wires, points and condenser along with cap and rotor. The radiator has be re-cored and alternator rebuilt. New air filters and new carberators cleaned. The head was reconditioned. The clutch master and slave cylinders are new as is the brake master cylinder. I've had offers of $2000 just to buy the super rare 14 inch Alpina wheels. She comes with the stock steering wheel too. World Upholstery makes a great carpet kit that I have used on another 2000cs and would really make the interior pop. There is one rust spot in one of the wheel wells were dirt must have collected. You can see it in the pictures. Other than that she is rust free. I welcome those who want to come see the car and take her for a drive. It was last registered in 1985! A whole lot of work went into to making this car run fast and reliable. The test was Norm having me drive it in the Snowball Rally with my wife as the navigator. She does not care to sit in the car along side the road while I tinker. It ran the 500 miles in style without a hiccup. It had plenty of power for our route through the Sierra's, it handled beautifully. The upgraded four piston Ate calipers and vented rotors are a welcomed improvement. I credit the Weber carburetors for the increased power over the identical gray 2000cs and it's Solexs' that Norm was driving. The car is mechanically sound, I would not hesitate to drive it across the country. It will need some attention it the next owner want to make it their daily driver. It would greatly benefit from new rubber door seals, rear electric window switches and a new windshield wiper motor. The heater controls are very stiff and the radio is not connected. Such an elegant lady \u2013 a real coachbuilt automobile. Rare, rare, rare! There were only 13,000 built between 1965-1970 (compared to 30,000 e9 CSs, and 139,000 2002s). They just didn\u2019t last or were as coveted as the e9 (3.0cs) models (although they are essentially the same from the a-pillar back). Respected valuation sites shows them nearly doubling in price in the past 5 years. Enthusiast groups can only list 140 total now on the road worldwide (I am sure there are maybe equal that amount or more as parts cars or being restored). I am restoring a 66 model currently with a 68 model as a rusted out parts car. This one stands out because of its documented provenience and that it is a California car. Arguably it could be the best rust free original (except for paint) example in the US. The car that Herbert Quandt ran his hands over in 1959 was indeed designed by Michelotti, However, it was the rear engine 700. \n\nThe Neue Klasse 1500 sedan prototype was shown at the 1961 Frankfurt Show two years later. Alex von Falkenhausen was the chief engineer and Wilhelm Hofmeister was the Chief Designer. Because BMW had nearly gone bankrupt, money was tight. If Michelotti was the designer of the Neue Klasse sedans, he received no credit for his work in any history book about BMW I've ever read.\n\nThe Karmann-built 2000CS assumes a number of styling cues from the Bertone-designed BMW 3200CS. So, think more of Giugiuaro than Michelotti. Hofmeister's design was criticized for the 2000CS's tall greenhouse and covered \"Asian Eyes\" headlamps. I can only assume the E9 coupes were designed by BMW in-house designers and aided by Karmann. I have always wanted to own another 2000cs. This is a well represented vehicle that obviously been well cared and maintained. The few details to be addressed (window switches, wiper motor, bumper) are not difficult to address by the next owner. If a design were to be given exclusive credit to an individual designer, the manufacturer would have been quick to give him credit. For example, in there are numerous published drawings of Michelotti's BMW 700 which was conceived in 1959 as I mentioned in an earlier post. \n\nAs far as concept drawings of the Neue Klasse sedans first shown in 1961, I have seen no concept drawings or other evidence of Michelotti's hand. Similarly, there are no published concept drawings of the 2000CS coupe. So, beyond hearsay, there appears to be no hard evidence to credit Michelotti with the design of the NK sedans or 2000CS coupe OR its more famous offspring, the E9 coupe. The 1600-2 and its progeny, the 2002 were BMW in-house designs by Georg Bertram and Manfred Renner - facts supported by the BMW Profiles book mentioned in my earlier post. \n\nThe BMWism website is a panoply of information that is filled with cut-and-paste contradictions. It also comes to conclusions based upon assumptions rather than evidence. For example, it perpetuates the notion that Michelotti designed the 1600-2 despite displaying the concept drawing signed by Georg Bertram. I learned a long time ago (1968 to exact when I began my design career) to sign my work lest credit be stolen from me. \n\nIn the 1960s, Michelotti was very busy. His designs of British cars, Spitfire, Herald, and TR4 are distinctively his own. According to one of my sources, the revised TR4, the TR6, was a collaborative effort with Karmann. Karmann had its own in-house designers and its ability to restyle Michelotti's original TR4 design into its next iteration is a pleasing tribute to the orignial. It should also be noted that the 1960s BMWs for which Michelotti has been given credit bear little resemblance to the either the cars themselves or possess the styling cues most often used in his designs. Note, for example, how little the Triumph Herald resembles the BMW 1600-2. \n\nI find David Oberndorfer's tribute to the 2000CS remarkable insofar as it looks like the BMW to which it pays homage, but by how, with a few slightly different design cues could be confused with an homage to the 1967 Alfa 1750 GTV. The GTV design is attributed to Giugiaro - and that leads us back to Bertone and the BMW 3200CS (1963). That's where this all began. \n\nI admit I've never seen the 2000CS (1967) and a 1750 GTV (1967) side-by-side, but I'd welcome the opportunity to point out the similarities. As for Michelotti, perhaps one of his Triumph cars would be welcome for comparison, too.\n\n\nThe lack of a definitive 'who' designed the 2000CS does not, in and of itself, bother me. But I feel we must be truthful to history. Assigning the design of the 2000CS to Michelotti - especially without empirical evidence - rewrites history into a kind of \"design-label prestige\" that fails to credit the lesser designers and engineers.
