The owner is well known in Northern California and his race/street engine builds are legendary. \n\nDriving this one is definitely 2002tii-like, but the refinement and sophistication of the engine and management systems provide a more modern, more efficient and more precise driving experience. Throttle response is crisp. Power is ever-increasing and seemingly limitless. Like other Rocket Man engines, there seems to be far more low-end torque - something a more typical two-iitre M10 (with or without K-fischer) seems to lack. \n\nMy knowledge of this car dates back a decade or so to the previous owner, a good friend and BMW devotee now living in blissful retirement. When I first laid eyes on it, I could see it had potential, however it also had cosmetic needs. \n\nI was able to pore over this car at Rocket Man's shop in Sonoma and truth be told, I was able to indicate where the owner should point-and-shoot his camera for the bidders, commenters, et. al. here on BaT.\n\nWith all due respect (which is IMHO a lot), this1972 tii touring, one of what may be less than 2,000 ever produced, is a worthy and I daresay, *practical* vintage ride for the quirkier of the already quirky 2002 community. \n\nI'm on the fence about whether a full repaint and rust repair is necessary - at least at this time. From a driver's perspective, there is so much to tend to with relatively little to gain from such an expensive exercise. \n\nHere's the bottom line: Without apologies, it's definitely presentable \"as-is\". Over 43 years I've seen and attended '02s from all over the world, and could assist in writing a treatise on BMW and rust, at from Neue Klasse onward. This isn't the place to try! \r\n\r\n1-I took extensive photos of the body, including areas known for their propensity to rust, such as rocker panels, inner fender areas, shock mounts, spare tire well, floor panels, pedal bucket area, etc. I am hopeful that interested parties can scrutinize these areas and see what is sound, which is, in my view, and other colleagues who have examined the car, with the exception of the driver's side frame rail adjacent to the pedal bucket area, the car as whole.\r\n\r\n2-I have repaired rusted frame rails such as this, including ones that were much more extensively corroded, on both sides of the car. Please note the passenger rail is in good condition.\r\n\r\n3-The pedal bucket area in the interior and exterior is still sound, unlike, again, a number of American cars I've attended previously.\r\n\r\n4-If need be, the carpets can been pulled up, for additional verification of overall soundness of the floor sections, however, other trained eyes have observed, and the photos show the floor sections to be sound.\r\n\r\n5-Please examine the photos of the interior beneath the spare tire and fuel tank covers, including the upper shock mount and fender well areas. These are also sound, and better than many I've seen before.\r\n\r\n6-When the collision repair was performed and most of the car was repainted, 8 years ago, using environmentally benign materials, as required by the State of California Air Resources Board, the San Francisco body shop owner advised that in 7 to 8 years, the \"bubbling\" areas on the exterior panels that were corrected, would return, unless we chose to take the entire finish down, which obviously wasn't done.\r\n\r\n6-As a previous commenter suggested, one could address these areas now, blending the paint, simply enough, or as others have suggested drive it and have big fun and attend the slow deterioration of the \"bubbles\" well down the road.
