I needed a car for my upcoming 16th year (of course!) but was simply too broke. My uncle (a car mechanic at the time) could see my need after hearing of my plight and called me to offer a 1973 100LS for a paltry $300 sum. It was an orange two door sedan with a manual gearbox and a sunroof. He had replaced the engine (with what he called a German Army Jeep 1.9 liter) but the car still had some needs. I was smitten by the prospects of driving such a machine though & quickly tried to figure out how to find the cash.\r\n\r\nIngenuity took over. I painted fences for cheap, delivered the local paper, washed cars, chopped wood, folded laundry & did not spend any of it in hopes of gathering enough for the 100LS. Then once I amassed my fortune (it seemed insurmountable at the time) I went to get it. \r\n\r\nThe paint had not been waxed (ever). The white interior had become lite brown, the car would track to the left, then track to the right when driving. The tires were well worn. But I happily paid my Uncle the $300 & pointed it home. \r\n\r\nIt took over an hour to go the 60 miles, as I shepherded it as straight as possible towards home. But, I simply cranked back the sunroof & motored my 1st car like I was on top of the world. \r\n\r\nOnce home I beamed with pride as I found a control arm bushing had gone - causing the toe to wander radically. Once fixed my Mother surprised me with a interior cleaning (with kitchen supplies) that changed the now white seats to like new again. I continued with paint repairs and hand rubbing that got the orange hue to shine. I then drove into my high-school lot feeling like I was in a new Rolls Royce. \r\n\r\nFront wheel drive was exotic in the 1981 land of Mustangs & Camaros. This car was seen as a real outsider. But, I adored it. When I could muster enough from the 1.9 I would spin those front tires whenever I could. I would pack the car with boys & girls ~ open roof, fairly good mpg, and unique looks made way for room at the cool kids table at lunch. It was epic. \r\n\r\nSure these days many say that the 100LS was not a superstar, but mine made everyone connected to it a celebrity at my school. The total came out to about $7500 including pickup at dealer and transport to my house from San Diego port. A huge chunk of it is the numerous fees and document brokerage. The intresting thing is that they mostly do not use containers anymore but super large RORO (rool-on, roll-off) ships with multiple waterproof decks and all vehicles chained down to the deck. Much easy to load/unload and they can fit more vehicles in based on sizes.
