You could NOT order a 68-73 510 with a 5speed (unless a Datsun dealership offered it as a \"dealer option) from the factory, BUT you could go to the Datsun dealership, likely as far back as the early 1970's & purchase a NEW 1970-1971 Datsun 240Z bellhousing, a NEW Datsun Roadster 2000 5speed gearbox & a NEW 2pc \"splined slider\" driveshaft, to convert to a 5speed. Datsun/Nissan Competition Department also offered full race 5speed gearboxes called \"option gearboxes\", with various gear ratio's depending on which track you were racing, but these gearboxes did NOT share many parts with standard production gearboxes...........most parts were only available thru Datsun/Nissan Comp, which makes it very difficult to rebuild them now! I'll be available all week to show the car, and to answer any questions I can.\r\n\r\nThe car has been solidly built, and there are several options available to an owner who'd like to shed some weight. In particular, the seat rails are tube steel, the fuel pump/filter and battery mounts are angle iron, and the hood, front valance, and trunk lid all remain stock steel. A switch to lighter pieces (such as aluminum and fiberglass) would provide a significant weight loss.\r\n\r\nThe 280ZX transmission was installed by the prior owner/builder, and he removed the 5th gear in order to comply with rules in effect then. I've not replaced the gear, but it's included with the spares package. (I'd planned to put it back in when a major transmission service was needed, but it hasn't been necessary yet.) Four v. five speed doesn't matter for NASA, and I understand that's the case for SCCA as well. I believe it used to be an issue in some vintage groups, where the car had to have only 4 speeds -- as original -- to be in compliance, but apparently that's now changed (or is changing) as well. \r\n\r\nI've only raced the car locally in NASA events, and the car has proven quite competitive (even with the circa-1972 brakes and aero) in their power-to-weight classing. It remains legal for NASA, and I think little or nothing is necessary to be vintage legal.\r\n\r\nThere are a couple of photos showing the bumpers installed. They are now removed, and included with the spares. The BRE Spook is also shown in the photos. It was mounted when unpainted, but removed for paint, and it's included, but not currently installed. The new owner is then free to use the Spook, air dam (shown in photos 43 and 170), or leave the front as is. \r\n\r\nI'm about 5'10\" and 175# in my gear, and the car fits me comfortably. The two sets of Hoosier R7s on the Rotas are worn but usable -- I'd say they would work well for practice and getting a feel for the car. Regarding the differential discussion: I've had no issues with the LSD R160, and from what I've read, being an LSD significantly strengthens the unit. I've also found a few posts from others who've used the R160 with significantly more powerful engines, also without trouble. (Of course, these are interweb posts, so I make no claim to correctness!) Again, though, I've had no issues.
