The Renault engine was a light and modern design, while the matching Renault 16 transaxle seemed almost ideal for the Europa project. In the Renault, the transaxle sat ahead of the engine, driving the front wheels. By relocating the combined engine/transaxle unit to the rear of the car and rotating it 180 degrees in plan, Lotus could obtain a ready-made modern mid-engine configuration - albeit one with four reverse gears. By repositioning the differential crown-wheel within the final drive assembly (made possible by the symmetrical split case), the direction of rotation of the output shafts was reversed, thus correcting this shortcoming.\r\n\r\nDespite this shared unit, there were a few small chances, one of which being the location of the reverse switch. This car has it located on the end of the transmission as seen in photo #126 - I will upload another photo to show this more clearly. In short - the reverse lights do work, apologies for the long winded response - lol.\r\n\r\n@Vtec4ever You're welcome to come by and try her on for size. As for handling, this car is so raw and communicates so well with the driver. It weighs next to nothing and has no unwanted technology to mask the driving feel! A true drivers car. \r\n\r\n@Sully52 Thank you!\r\n\r\n@drbobm4 Sure - what can I tell you about it? \r\n\r\nThe second tank was a factory option, it was however upgraded to remove the cross-feed line that is dangerously low to the ground. Instead, a Jaguar fuel tan selector switch was installed to swap between the two tanks. Functionality of this is demonstrated in our road test video. It is a copy of the promotional cars that high volume Lotus dealers would receive, and was based on the Lotus 62 \u201cEuropa\u201d race car driven by John Miles in the Gold Leaf Team Lotus (GLTL) paint scheme. When researching this, I couldn\u2019t find any high enough resolution photos to make out the details of the emblems, but Colin Chapman\u2019s son, Clive, graciously helped out. Classic Team Lotus had just completed their restoration of the Lotus 49 F1 car, and he had extra silk screened emblems from that project that he made available. He was a bit concerned that the colors may not be exact, as the 49 had faded somewhat, but who could ask for a better authority? We matched the paint scheme to the colors of the emblems. I was told at the time that Colin Chapman also drove the S1 in this scheme from London to Paris on its introduction. It was originally to be marketed only to Europe; thus the name. I wanted to keep the car as original as possible, but besides the already mentioned Jaguar fuel transfer system to eliminate the dangerous low hanging tank cross-feed, we also made a few common period correct performance additions, including Spax adjustable shocks, Weber carb, and larger GT-6 front disc brakes. I hope that whoever the lucky future owner of this car appreciates the extreme effort and detail that went into this unique restoration.
