Since registering my 1988/77 Charleston back in 2002, the process has become increasingly difficult. Back then, I had to take the car to a \"referee\" who looked over the paperwork from Florida, where the car was originally titled, checked the engine size and verified that it was smog exempt. It was a long process and even required a second visit to the referee a few years later because the car's \"smog exempt\" status was not keyed in correctly. Since then I know the State has really cracked down on specialty cars like these as more and more folks have tried to register them. I know of at least three people who ended up selling their cars because they couldn't get them registered in CA and/or their insurance companies would not insure a car with a CA address and out of State registration (Some States will register cars like these and their owners will keep them up to date to be able to drive them in CA). It could have been a Charleston or more likely a standard 2CV.\r\nIf the sticker in the engine bay is original then the letters shown are Citroen paint codes. EXY is black and \r\nThe dashboard and front door capping are not correct for a Dolly plus it's missing the chrome stripe under the doors. The standard 2CVs at the time just had a stripe of black tape. If the sticker in the engine bay is original then it's showing the Citroen paint codes. EXY is black and EKA is red so it could have been a Charleston. I see the inner faces of the wheels are still black instead of the Grey on a Dolly.\r\nDoesn't make a lot of difference, mechanically they're all the same just dressed up differently and it does look nice. It's missing the red pin stripes down the side of the hood but that's easily attended to if the new owner is inclined to do so.\r\nNice to see another survivor. This not true of earlier smaller engine versions of course.\r\n\r\nThe rear seat is fine for a car of this size. She has four adults in hers often.\r\n\r\nIt is correct that last years of manufacturer were no longer in France. Claims that these cars were less than the French built is trash talk echoing back and forth among non-owners who are repeating others empty tales. Having owned a half dozen 2CVs, including a very late non-French built one, our direct experience suggests foibles are not special to the late cars. \r\n\r\nThere are lots of \"Dolly\" like restorations that may not have originally been a Dolly. If you are into really collecting museum perfect examples these resto-mod cars might not be what you want. If you are motivated you can take the recreation closer to an original Dolly to the point true 2CV experts would struggle. \r\n\r\nThe renovations of a car that is fairly crude underneath by design favoring utility and a price point over hidden finishes, seem typical and tidy. The car has an old-school separate frame which perhaps makes it hard to sort out what is what in the photos.\r\n\r\nBest advice so far is the get out and drive it advice. These are super fun to drive, rather inexpensive to maintain and fuel.
