This wasn\u2019t evident until the seller posted the video of the VIN stamping and the build plate. There\u2019s zero logic behind affixing a non-Lotus build plate to a Lotus body shell, especially a car restored to this level so this tag is most likely original to the donor body shell that was used during restoration. Never mind that the build tag is affixed with original rivets while the mismatched VIN tag is now attached with screws.\r\n2.\tThe rear chassis rail reinforcements are non-Lotus. They are the short, unmodified version from a GT or standard car. This is a detail often missed and hard to recreate when making a Lotus tribute car, again leading to the conclusion that this car has a body shell from a non-Lotus car.\r\n3.\tMissing multiple Lotus specific items under the bonnet like the brake servo. While these items often get removed over the years, the mounting points would be evident. On this car, the mounting holes are missing.\r\n4.\tThere appear to be old spot weld marks from a front mounted battery tray.\r\n5.\tThe telltale hump in the trunk over the axle pumpkin is present but it does not look like a factory installed hump which were crudely welded into place with the welds covered by sloppily applied sealer. This one looks professionally installed with no seams. You could chalk this one up to an overly zealous restoration where the body man smoothed out the seams but, with the easy availability of reproductions, it\u2019s likely the hump was installed during restoration.\r\nThere are other wear-type items that are wrong for a Lotus Cortina but these could have been errantly replaced over the years by ordering the wrong parts. This is a beautiful car that\u2019s had a high level of restoration but it\u2019s likely not an original Lotus Cortina assembled by Chapman\u2019s gang in Chestnut. My guess is that the seller & consigning dealer don\u2019t/didn\u2019t know and that this is a tribute car and they were led to believe it\u2019s authenticity.
