I owned this exact motorcycle when I was a much younger man! But even so, by the time I acquired my Vmax, I had already been riding motorcycles for twenty years.\r\n\r\nAt the time I bought it, I wasn't in the market for a new street bike, but a friend of mine owned a Yamaha dealership in the small town where I grew up. I stopped in his shop while visiting over Christmas vacation, and he offered me any street bike in the showroom at his dealer cost. His shop sold predominately off-road motorcycles, and he had a hard time moving big street bikes. If memory serves, MSRP for the '88 model was $5,995. After perusing everything on the floor, I told him I liked the red Vmax best. \r\n\r\nHe offered a loaner helmet so I could go for a test ride. I liked it immediately, it was different than anything I had ridden before. I'd already read a test ride article on the initial '85 model, and I liked the fact that Yamaha had taken the V4 engine from their Venture touring machine and built a hot rod \"dragster\". My initial riding impression was it felt like a muscle car with a big V-8. Very impressive straight-line acceleration! \r\n\r\nMy out-the-door offer was $4,800, but I procrastinated until February before I went back with cash in hand. His business partner let me ride it away for $4,500, I was stoked! I had caught a rare dry day in the Oregon winter season, but it was still cold for the 100-mile-long highway ride home. Full leathers made it almost fun!\r\n\r\nI still had the Vmax ten years later when I bought a new Honda Superhawk 996, and it was the only time in my life I owned two large street bikes at the same time. More than a few gas pump jockeys were amazed by the fuel filler hidden under its seat. I'd always say they didn't have enough room for a conventional gas tank after they'd shoe-horned that engine into the frame. \r\n\r\nBut the fun didn't last, because on my way to work one morning it broke a rod with 18K miles on the clock. The engine was a total loss, it even broke the cases. I was bummed! But even though I'd maintained it well, I'd also ridden it hard, perfecting my smoky burnout launch from countless traffic lights. In the 10+ years I rode it, not a single car ever beat it off a traffic light. Few even came close. I had a highway roll-on contest with a Corvette one day from 60-100+ MPH, the Yamaha left the Vette for dead. When I slowed down and he caught up, he gave me a thumbs-up. Some guys just like a good street race. \r\n\r\nThe only bike that ever came close on the street was a big Kawasaki Ninja, but the rider couldn't do a good launch with a sportbike, and the Vmax smoked him like all the rest. \r\n\r\nI finally did get clobbered one summer however! My normal routine was to get the bike serviced in March or April every year, and have the shop install a new back tire at the same time. I never got more than 2,000 miles out of a rear Dunlop, some went up in smoke much quicker. By August, I took it back to the Yamaha shop for its second back tire in less than six months. It was good in a straight line, but a pig in the corners. You had to be careful on curvy backroads because it could bite you quickly. But I managed to keep it on the asphalt, and rubber-side-down for its entire life. \n\neBay was new to me when Max exploded. I briefly tried to find a replacement engine, but I didn't get very far. I discovered an auction by a guy who had bought a brand new Vmax and pulled its engine for a mini sprint car. He put the rolling chassis on eBay, minus only its engine. In those days, eBay didn't have very good protection for the identity of buyers and sellers. I watched the auction until it ended, and his chassis alone sold for about the same amount I had paid for my bike brand new in 1989. \n\nThe opening bid was about $1,500, and I harvested the email addresses for the losing bidders, and sent them all the same basic message: \"I have an '88 model in near showroom condition, but with a blown engine. The first guy that offers me $2,000, it's yours!\"\n\nThere was a guy on the East Coast that was willing to pay a bit more, but he wanted me to ship it to him. Since I am in Oregon, there was a guy from Las Vegas who was ready to drive to my house and pick it up. He ended up buying it from me, because he had a Yamaha V4 from the Venture touring bike with his own custom made intake manifold and a Weber carburetor. He just wanted a chassis for his engine, and it should've been an easy bolt-in project. Not sure he ever finished it however, 'cuz I never heard from him again. \n\nBut in the end I made out okay. If you look at my overall cost, I rode the Vmax almost 20,000 miles over a decade, for a difference of about $3K! Of course I spent almost that much again on back tires! I had just traded my 90 454 ss for the 1991 model. A friend and I stopped in Jim Moon Yamaha to look at dirt bikes and he had 2 vmax's there. One was a twin to this one with low miles and the other the brand new 92 burgundy version. I ended up with the 88 model and rode it for a year then sold it when I moved home to rural Missouri to start my own business. \r\nFast forward 1 year later the summer of 93 I was engaged to be married in September and my brother who had just graduated was also engaged the following spring.
