They updated some of timing components from B6 to B7 and then further from 06' to 08' within the B7 generation. Im not saying dont have the timing job done, or it want ever need it.. im just saying there are still car driving around with over 150k miles on the original guides and tensioners. Further, unless your cam adjusters are broken (not usual) a good guide and tensioner job can be completed for $3-4,000. Its not $8-10,000 as some would like people to believe. That didn't take long...LOL. Chains have not been addressed because there's simply no need to address them at this point. Internet folklore would have you believe every 4.2L S4 needs chains and guides at 100K, which is simply not true. I'm not saying some do or don't just saying that based on my experience with these cars this particular one doesn't show signs of broken guide or chain problems. No CELs, no rough idle, no chain slapping or weird noises. There's cold start video posted for review and I'm happy to run a VAG-COM report for anyone interested. \r\n\r\nFor what it's worth this is my 3rd 4.2L powered S4; 2004 B6, 2007 B7 and now this 2008 B7, none of which needed chains. Oh and there's a direct injected (RS4 Style) 4.2L 2008 VW Touareg thrown in the mix somewhere so I guess I've owned 4 4.2Ls. The passenger side front bumper appeared to have been in a minor fender bender causing scuffs below the headlight and minor deformation. No cracks or broken plastic. Various rock chips on the front end and front fenders as well as 3 rock chips in the windshield. Two small door dings in the driver\u2019s door, one in the driver\u2019s side rear door and one above the driver\u2019s side rear tail light. The rear bumper had a nice black scuff on it behind the driver\u2019s side rear wheel from a tire the PO hit on the interstate. No structural damage anywhere on the car, just cosmetic. \r\n\r\nI had my body guy repair all the damaged areas. After repair he sprayed the front clip (bumper, both fenders and hood). He also sprayed the driver\u2019s side doors, rear quarter panel and the back bumper. The rear is a fixed height coil spring so you would need to source a taller set of coil springs to raise the rear. Maybe find an OEM set of coils? \r\n\r\nThe is set up for this ride height so it rides and handles very well for how low it sits. You may not want to adjust the height. I've driven it daily for most of summer as my Sequoia has been in the body shop. It's not harsh at all, actually quite pleasant. \r\n\r\nRegarding the wheels, I only have the spare 18\" wheel and tire that came on the car. Big O Tire did not up their records to account for a different vehicle he was having serviced so the data was transmitted to CarFax wrong. Curious what year model your s4 was and the mileage? \n\nJust so we are clear the \u201cchains\u201d don\u2019t break. It\u2019s the plastic timing chain guides and tensioners that crack and break. In the early years (04-05 B6) of the 4.2L Audi used an inferior plastic that became hard and brittle over time and eventually cracked or broke in half causing the chain to \u201cslap\u201d against the cover and lose tension. Audi supposedly revised the guide material in the later years (05.5-08 B7) to address the issue. That being said i've got a timign chain kit in the waiting just in case/and/or to sell with mine when its time. Great example of a 6 speed...someone's gonna be lucky! The cold start video is a good tell of any chain issues. In fact I just heard (here-say) that Audi recently extended the warranty on 2008 S4's to 10 years to cover the timing system. Why would they do that if the problem was fixed by then?\n\nAs far as I know Audi never released total B6/B7 S4 production numbers. But for what can be inferred there were 2-3 times as many B6's produced as B7's. It was also the B6's that faced the issue first, so yes most of the timing chain failure threads you see feature a B6. By the time the B7's were facing failure it was old news. My B7 failed right on time at 96k miles. Did I post a thread about it? No. The topic has been beat to death.\n\nUse the JHM kit which includes stronger timing chain adjusters and the metal RS4 version of the guide that is most prone to fail and you'll never have to worry about it again. Do this at 100k.\n\nI had a local specialist install the JHM intermediate kit and a new clutch out the door for $7k.\n\nA friend of mine with a B8 A4 paid $5k to replace his head when his timing chain tensioner failed. Considering how much better the B7 S4 is than a B8 A4, I find the $7k repair bill tolerable.\n\n\nI'll regurgitate a previous post of mine....\n\n\n\nPlease take the following commentary as anecdotal, no one can say for sure IF there will be a problem or how that problem will manifest.\n\nThere is no maintenance that can be done to prevent the \u2018timing chain\u2019 issue. The 4.2 BBK has 2 distinct problems in the timing system.\n\nThe first is that the timing chain adjusters (for the variable valve timing) fail. Usually this is indicated by chain rattle on WARM startup. It usually results in the chain jumping a tooth, and manifests as misfire on one bank. This is the good way to have the problem since it rarely results in any engine damage. Sometimes the electric adjuster motor gets damaged, and that\u2019s a pricey part. Regular oil changes may reduce cold start rattle, but cold start rattle doesn\u2019t indicate a problem.\n\nThe second problem is that the plastic (not metal as in the RS4) chain guides crack. Which one cracked? How did it crack? What RPM? Depending on circumstances the damage can range from a misfire code, to bent valves, to scored pistons, to engine replacement. There is no warning rattle with guide failure. It happens suddenly and without warning.\n\n*PERSONALLY* I think all guides will crack. The original design sees to that. However some crack and it doesn\u2019t have any effect. They crack in such a way as to relieve the stress and still support the chain. You can actually scope the back of the engine and see if the guides are cracked and you often find cracked guides on an engine that shows no problems.\n\nIt does seem to be a 60k-110k mile problem. There are many, many BBK S4\u2019s out there with high miles that have never had a problem. It seems that once you get solidly past 100k miles you\u2019re in the clear. Instead of a horsepower gain the JHM software alters the torque curve to give a more linear feel to the car all the way to redline.....which is 7K : ) Said another way throttle response is increased giving the car more of a \"get up and go\" feeling. The JHM software also takes full advantage of the supporting modifications - 2.5\" Downpipes and JHM Intake Spacers. Adding downpipes or gutting the Cats on your existing downpipes to create \"piggy\" pipes is very common on this platform. The car already had a Milltek catback on it so I opted to add the matching Milltek 2.5\" downpipes. These eliminate the lower Cats and replace them with smaller Sport Cats that sit next to the exhaust manifolds creating better flow and throttle response.\r\n\r\nThis is good link to some real world testing of the JHM Tune: http://nickscarblog.com/reviews/jhm-tuned-audi-b7-s4-review\r\n\r\nAs with anything when you start making changes other problems pop up. The car has 4 o2 sensors, 2 upstream next to the upper cats and 2 downstream at the rear cats. When flow is increased by gutting the OEM cats OR by adding hi-flow downpipes the lower o2 sensors freak out causing a Check Engine Light. This is where the 2nd part of the JHM tune comes in.
