Instead you get this. One of the best sedans ever made. Does it require a bit more attention than a new car? Yes. Is it infinitely cooler and more rewarding? Yes. \n\nI would reference previous e39 540i listings on BaT for common issues, including but not limited to timing chain guides, plastic cooling system components, window regulators, cup holders, gaskets causing oil drips. \n\nThe good is that this example is '03, so last year of the e39 production with M-Parallels, fold down sear seats with ski bag (very undervalued spec), spare set of winters (if you daily this in the North East), and a few tasteful mods like the front bumper. Seems like the owner took the time to be diligent with researching repairs, parts and had good taste. However, to me, the bad is that it's had a few owners, had panels repainted, and I\u2019m not a fan of the steering wheel modification especially the irregular gap above the airbag hub cap. Although the mileage discrepancy makes sense to me due to pixel loss and the miles track consistently in terms of how they were accumulated, it\u2019s definitely a con in the CarFax history for resale value. Overall though, this isn\u2019t a concourse car. This was done at 128420 mi.\n\nLast winter, I cracked the rear bumper passenger side corner and dented the driver side fender. This time, the rear bumper was repairable. The bumper was repaired and repainted along with the rear fender repair. The rest of the car was not touched, but with these types of repairs there is some blending into parts of the door panels. Low miles at 55k, but the front bumper had been pulled off a bit on a parking strip, leaked some oil, etc. Figured I was in the car $6,700 with tax and license plus I had a goal of having a great car for $10k. First attacked the bumper issue (with some duct work that was damaged as well), then did powder coating to the valve covers with new gaskets and spark plugs, then the power steering reservoir and hoses. Did all new filters and an oil change so I knew where I was starting. Had the radiator blow apart, so redid the entire cooling system. Replaced the timing chain tensioner as a precaution. Took a while, but fixed a twofold radio/navigation issue as well as did the widescreen/MK4 upgrade. \n\nSo now I have a great looking 540/6 and I am now right at $10k. I have a Hella Celis rear light kit to put in, and then maybe some updated wheels. Love the car! Not cheap, but a wonderful car for $10k. It was sure fun to drive without the radio working, listening to all the mechanical bits.\n\nGuessing this car needs to be looked at the same way. Buy the car, chip away at the typical issues knowing you will spend $2k to $3k or so and drive the crap out of it.
