If it is valves, then a new head gasket will be required anyway, so pulling the head is probably the thing to do. A valve (or valves) in each cylinder could be stuck open, or the rocker arm to valve stem clearances could be too tight. If you haven't already done so, check the valve clearances, and put some penetrating oil on the valve stems at the top of the guides.\n\nFor a wet compression test, I've always used a light oil like 3-in-1 or even ATF. For penetrating oil, either Kroil or Marvel Mystery Oil would be my choices - although the MMO would probably be OK for the wet test as well. I haven't quite yet figured out the best way to buy parts, but two spare engines have already followed me home. I was able to tune it up, and with the 6 volt battery that the 444 carried, it starts up quite well. The car gets a lot of positive attention even though it carries the dull, original white paint. Right now I'm just stabilizing the floorboards which are rusting more from leaks soaking the carpets than from the underside. But there is really not much rust through - the metal is so thick. I'll put it back on the road for the summer. Need to install seat belts and a harness bar with plans to take it to Lime Rock where the PV444 won the Petit Lemans Race in 1958. It's no modern car and drives like an old truck, but its fun.
