Having said that, it is closer in spirit to the ID as it is the most de-spec'd model you could get.\r\n\r\nI had one of those, a '72 US model that the fantastic Wally Escherich helped me restore. Once we were done with it, and the car was perfectly set up, it gave me a true impression what they are all about. I love driving them on the freeway. They are actually quite fast and because of the amazing road holding, you do not feel how fast you are going. Needless to say that I was way beyond the speed limit here in CA and constantly in the fast lane in a super stable way and super comfy. RIP Wally, who passed away suddenly last week. My big Citroen for the past 15 years is a 1961 DS19, made in June of that year. I chose this car, made in a six month period, for several features that were important to me, including the 83 hp version of the three-main-bearing engine, the original front styling, the original dash design, clutching system with centrifugal regulator (rather than low-pressure pump), and 12v electrics.\r\n\r\nI have a strong preference for the old 3-bearing engine. I find its power adequate, and its noise level and smoothness much better than that of the slightly more modern engine used after 1965. I also greatly prefer the semi-automatic gearbox. Rolling along for hours at 120kph in such comfort and style is really remarkable.\r\n\r\nFor a few of us, (there's another late '61 DS owner among us) these late '61s are a \"grail\". Other folks prefer late Pallases with their bling and more powerful engines; for others the DS23 with EFI is the answer. Some prefer the mechanical gearchange (though the reason for this is beyond me).\r\n\r\nI know it's difficult, but you could try to drive a few, or at least discuss the car with active owners. Come to our Rendezvous in Saratoga Springs, New York in June.\r\n\r\nOr take the plunge and buy this DSp\u00e9cial. In general, you can think of the D-series in 3 series, aligned with the major body style changes (The 3rd series moved from the open headlights to the covered swiveling headlights).\n\nTo me, the earlier the better, mainly driven by the most fantastic and true-to-the-original Bertoni design that truly is second to none. I much prefer the open headlight models as I feel the front end just looks perfect compared to the rather bloated look of the later models. The details are so much finer on earlier cars and the interiors are so much simpler - and with crazier colors and fabric choices that are so decidedly French. I think the later cars lost a lot of that and the plush Pallas versions to me are like an overstuffed turkey.\n\nPersonally, I love the DS as much as the ID (I own a 1960 ID) but it is still the DS where it's at with more innovative features and cooler design (That dash for example was the largest molded plastic piece ever mass produced when the car came out).\n\nI personally think they all drive fabolous. Early cars are clearly lower on power. But I would guess you only would want an early ID (like mine) with a little more horsepower. Every other model is more than adequate. Even on the early ID, we were hustling right along more powerful weapons during a recent California Mille (I have to say that the owner is an ex kart racer so his driving skills were way above average ...). More power however, suit the car extremely well as it it really transforms it into a marvelous GT-like feel. So I can completely understand the popularity of later models. The engine is a stone-old design but as it got developed over such a long period, it is amazingly refined and smooth, especially on later models. The car truly glides down the freeway and that's true with all models. I have a personal preference for all things manual but this car is very well suited for an (semi-) automatic. I think we are getting to a point where the mechanicals, especially the suspension are no longer seen as so strange and expensive. That's driven by a higher value for the cars that now can justify fixing and restoring them and the fact that it really is not that difficult - certainly not more difficult and expensive than taking care of a Lancia. All the other mechanical bits and pieces are pretty straight forward on a Citroen. And even a complete suspension swap sets you back less than $3k. There should no longer be a fear of taking those cars on. When in doubt, sent it to one of a few super experts in the US.\n\nWhen it comes to value of the non-coachbuilt, non-convertible D-series, there is a clear difference of very early cars that drive quite a lot of money. That's due to the fact that they are rare and pre 1958 models are events eligible (The DS ran in the Mille Miglia). Finding a highly original or restored early DS will set you back over 6 figures. The lower the VIN the more the $$$ go up. As metric & others mentioned, with the suspension in max height, the car can be driven - slowly - without dragging the drum on the ground. I had put the RR fender back on, and this drove the kids and spectators bonkers - lots of good laughs until the Fuzz threatened me with a tow job due to \"driving an unsafe car\". Unsafe hell! One of the earliest DS dealers in the US was Andre Garnier, now in his late '80s I believe, who told me that awhile after he'd opened his store in Buffalo - what a place to start! But then FWD was ONLY available on a DS, so Buffalo snow was not a problem - he decided Citroen hdqtrs needed to promote the car's capabilities better, so he removed the entire right rear suspension arm from the body! After blocking off that side hydraulic line, he drove the car from Buffalo to Citroen's main office in NJ sans one entire wheel/arm/brakes et al, making the entire round trip perfectly safely! \nWhen Andre got to NJ, the Cit org was shocked, but possibly afraid of lawsuits or whatever for even showing the car that way, and declined to make an ad showing the car's great stability. Andre was greatly disappointed, but continued to drive the car on 3 corners all over downtown Buffalo, getting hauled into court multiple times by the local Gendarmes who thought he was nuts. The first time he showed up in court, the judge threw it out in disbelief. But the Fuzz kept bothering him with threats to go to court again. However, on another occasion he got a lady judge who flat didn't believe the car could do that, so he convinced her to ride with him, took her around the block, and she told the cops to leave him alone - the car didn't fall over. \nWally Escherich will be sorely missed - he was the loudest voice for Citroen west of the Rockies and a first class expert on the cars and their maintenance. Wally actually, unbeknownst to himself at the time, put me onto my first California DS - a '62 wagon buried under a pile of empty boxes in a gentleman's garage in NAPA. He'd sent me an anonymous email on my first chatline plea for driveshafts for a friend's '59 ID19 telling me to contact Clem Landau who had a pair - Wally seemed to know every single car on the W. coast and elsewhere, and where parts were stashed. When Clem opened his garage door, I saw this box heap with two funky rubber Dagmars sticking out of the pile - that's all that was visible of his wagon parked 12 yrs earlier. lI bought it on the spot and a few months later, we showed up at our first NOFrillsIronBottom Motoring tour in Pasadena, and at one stop Wally came over and admired the pristine-patinaed Break, introduced himself, then tried to steal my girlfriend! I've never drunk more beer with anyone else, nor shared more stories of Cit fixes.
