He had just won a \u201cred, Oldsmobile convertible\u201d with a two-dollar raffle ticket that he had purchased form a coworker in the Millwright shanty at Wheeling Steel a month before. They called him on Thursday with the news that his ticket had been picked and that he could collect the car on Friday, the next day, anytime after 12:00 outside of a seedy bar on south 3rd street in Steubenville.\r\nThe seller of the tickets hadn\u2019t offered a description of the car, the year, or anything else\u2026but dad had envisioned a sleek, Olds Jetfire with bucket seats and a white top. Something that he and mom could cruise in on warm summer evenings (he would have been 40 then) to the undying envy of Moe Belardine and Dominic Potenzini, his two archnemeses on the millwright gang. They had spent their entire careers in a wild game of one-upmanship and a red, Olds Jetfire Convertible would have clinched it for dad.\r\nDinner had to always be served at 4:10, as soon as he got home from the mill, and he didn\u2019t want to take the time to pick up the car himself\u2026so, my younger brother, Larry, and I were tasked with picking it up and driving it home for him. I was on midnight-shift and Larry was still in high school, so I drove up from Wheeling to pick him up from school at 2:30 and head to the bar in Steubenville. \r\nI knew he had been bamboozled as soon as we turned onto 3rd Street as there sat this whale of a red, 1960, Olds Dynamic 88 that had certainly bathed in its fair share of the local acid rain that hungrily sucked years from our car\u2019s lives. Even though it was only nine-years old, it was well on its way to becoming a rusted old hulk. The faded black top had a couple of rips\u2026nothing that a couple of iron-on patches (this predated McGyver and duct-tape as the universal fixit) couldn\u2019t have closed. The exhaust system had a few holes in it so it sounded a lot like the Sherman Tanks that we saw on the Saturday morning war movies that were so prevalent in those days. \r\nLarry drove my SS-396 and I drove the Dynamic 88 back to the house and gave it a quick wash in the driveway before shoehorning it into the garage. We were just (barely) able to close the garage door as these beasts are nearly 17-feet long. Then we waited. \r\nWe heard dad pull into the driveway and go into the house and I told him to close his eyes as I led him to the garage. As I opened the door, Larry started and revved that 394 cubic inch engine\u2026the sound of which nearly shattered the single-pane glass windows in the garage and we both let out a howl. \r\n\r\nAs I saw the color drain from his face at the sight of the Oldsmobile, I felt bad that we pulled a trick on him and laughed\u2026. He just turned and walked over to sit at the dinner table\u2026and never said a word all during the meal. When the dishes had been cleared, he told me and Larry to wait until it was dark out and to drive the car back down to the bar, park it on the street, and just leave the keys in the ignition. It\u2019s great to see a car still in its original style. The only things I would do is to restore the original ride height and adjust the carburetor to restore the cold start function. I would replace the front springs because the twist nuts inserted in the coils just do not work for me and neither do the lowering blocks in the rear. The front suspension is to low to the point of compromising the front suspension geometry and ride. (Note the excessive negative wheel camber) the other reason I would restore the original ride height is the way the white wall tires blend with the wheel arch openings when closer to the stock height. They just look better with how they merge at the top. (See sales brochures included on wheel fender matchups.) another truly amazing thing about this car is just how nice the undercarriage and under body structures are. The rust prone flush and dry rocker panels are amazing. \r\n\r\nI would thoroughly enjoy driving this car around. A perfect summer touring and cruising car. Great for spring and fall too. I was smitten. The next day I returned with a stack of cash. That car was was every bit as nice to drive as any Cadillac of the period and so much less common. Though, A/C would have been a nice option for the ATL summers.\r\n\r\nThe panoramic rear window and lack of B pillars had such a cool effect. And the flat roof gave it such a sleek look. The nice, powerful 394 paired with the Hydra-Matic was somehow both potent and smooth. When the clock gets down to 2 minutes to go, if someone makes a bid, then the clock starts over with 2 minutes and so on, until the last bid happens. An auction can go on for several minutes after the 11:55 pm projected end time. Make sure not to wait til the last second, I learned from personal experience bidding myself, and lost out because my darn internet slowed down, give yourself time. Also make sure to turn your volume up, if you hear ding ding, and did not see the price move, refresh you computer, some computer systems, do not stay linked correctly in time.
