In my younger, dumber days I replaced one. The short version of the process is to remove the front seats and everything forward of them until you get to the firewall. Replace the heater core. Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly. But who cares if you buy the car to enjoy and don't mind having a V8 rumble over the unique inline XK derived inline 4.2 L 6I brawl, - you're off to a great driving experience no matter what. I have owned several XJs, including Ser 1, (that was the base for this Ser 2) and Ser 3 plus newer ones, and they have always been designed as a driver's car more than a luxury barge. Sharp corning thanks to the wishbones all the way around, and great brakes thanks to the rear inboard disc rotors makes them wonderful drivers and set them apart from their German \"panzerwagen\" MB S-class counterparts of its day. The MB will be on its side in the corner ditch long after the Jag is sporting rapidly on its way. But those very same great driving dynamics come at a price, as you have to deal with dual fuel tanks ( with everything that goes with that) as the IRS and low body line would not allow for a conventiona one big tank , as well as 4 shocks in the back, and attending to those inboard brakes - eeh, let's just say it is not a quick job. So while the power plant indeed has been simplified, the rest is (beautiful) Jag technology that is anything but simple. Great news is that parts supply is plentiful and not too bad (but for sure don't expect Cheve prices....). On the comment on the placement of the antenna, - that is the original position, and I cannot tell if the original telescopic antenna has been replaced with a solid. That is not a bad thing as replacing the old telescopic motor requires taking out the entire rear light assembly. Primrose Yellow suits this car so well, and the rust repairs appear to be reasonably easy to address when in time it becomes an issue (if it stays in CA not much risk of rain water coming up anyway...). While the rear badging is a bit screwed up as someone notes, at least the previous or current owner didn't put an aftermarket leaper on the bonnet , which remains nice and clean as it should be. It will be interesting to see where it lands, someone is getting a great driver and a \"poor man\" 4-door version of a Jensen Interceptor, Rover P5B or Gordon-Keeble who all shared the same concept of British style and finesse combined with a US V8 power house.
