Most of the readers of this ad probably know the significance of these numbers to originality, but if not below is the guidance from the Triumph Registry:\n\n\u201cJust above the battery are two body number tags screwed (not riveted) to the bulkhead. The first tag will start with the letters \u201cEB\u201d followed by 4-6 digits and was used for fully trimmed bodies all the way through the TR3A\u2019s. The \u201cEB\u201d number is generally close to the original commission number but slightly higher. This was the body number designation used by the factory when the bodies were fully trimmed out with interiors. The second, lower body number tag, which consists of all digits, is the official body number used by Triumph. This six or seven digit body number is what appears in the official Triumph factory vehicle build records for all TR2\u2019s and TR3A\u2019s.\u201d\n\nI would also note that your picture of the Commission Plate on the bulkhead is not good enough to read the Commission Number. I think your ad would benefit from a good close-up of this chassis number. And, can you verify that the chassis number, TS43713 L, is the same number as is indicated as the VIN number on the title? No.\" painted in black next to stamped number on this plate stands for \"Commission Number.\"\n\nSerious buyers who will pay for originality want to actually see the vehicle's numbers match with the build record information. It's all part of due diligence prior to purchase.\n\nAs a recent example of the importance of these details, I note the red TR3 smallmouth that sold recently had a rectangular shaped Commission Plate, whereas every other 1956 or 1957 TR3 smallmouth I've ever seen has the older style, octagonal shaped Commission Plate. The seller of that car never did show us the EB number, so we could be given the chance to see if the EB was close to the Commission Number. So, even for cars that are not being marketed on pure originality, I think this stuff is important.\n\n@Stingray, the folks at British Motor Heritage send along all of the information they have on these cars in the build certificate. I'm guessing the Standard Triumph build records they have simply do not include the EB number. Again, the EB number is nifty, in that you can pretty much match the EB with the Commission, based on its numerical closeness to the VIN. So, we'll see if the TR3B now on BaT carries any extra value for the TR4 motor and all synchro gearbox, but my notion is a nice TR with overdrive is going to be the car that breaks the $30,000 barrier in most instances.
