The value imo is in the loose parts, primarily.\r\n\r\nI owned a 1972 2002tii that was a nearly 100% rust-free California body that was rebuilt by a fairly well-known rebuilder out there. The MD friend of mine that bought the car ended up spending over $45,000 to get the car as good as possible. I pulled back the carpets to look and take pictures, and lay on the garage floor and poked and prodded the pans and couldn't find any soft spots or pitting. Whatever caused the stains obviously didn't stay in there very long. \r\n\r\nI realize now that I should have read the description more carefully before approving it (my fault, not BaT folks). The car wasn't at the body shop for 30 years straight. It sat under a carport at the body shop for several years until that shop went out of business in the early '90's. My dad then moved it back to his warehouse for several years. I lived out of the state for all this time, and rarely saw the car then, so I'm not sure about exact time periods. He then found another shop that he liked and took it there, where it remained until it was moved back to his warehouse after his death in 2015.\r\n\r\nDad raced in the SCCA Southeastern region through the 1960's and early '70's in a Begra, a Lotus 23, and a Fiat Abarth, and was regional champion in H-modified class in '62 and '63 (before I was born, but he'd told me the stories and I have the trophies). While this car did have some water in it at some point, as evidenced by the carpet stains, it never \"sat outside for years and years, with the rain pouring in\". If it ever sat outside, it was for days, not years, as my dad drove by the body shop every day going to and from work, and would have pitched a fit if it were left outside for any length of time. Otherwise, it was always stored either inside, or under a roof, albeit one that probably leaked. As I mentioned in my last comment, the floor is solid, and I uploaded some pictures of this (although it's difficult to tell much from them; I'm not a photographer either). \r\n\r\nAlso, it's true that it would take far more money than the finished product would be worth to do a full concours restoration on it, but for far less than some boring crossover, someone could have a really nice 50 year old classic. Got it running with little effort, but rebuilding all of the hydraulics was a PIA. Even back then, bmw made things hard. SIX independent brake lines coming off the master cylinder. Brake booster impossible to remove and reattach without special tool. Bottom-hinged brake pedal with overly complex linkage to operate firewall mounted master (why??). Many bushings in that system, all difficult to replace. \r\n\r\nOther than that, not bad.
