Despite what some may tell you, they are stable, tough little cars. They drive nice and don't require any more maintenance than a regular vehicle. Parts are easy to get---from Texas. My son is a mechanic and services mine. He states there were a couple of things that differed and he had to learn, but otherwise, it's basically the same. The big difference is the time you spend talking to everyone that admires it. Gassing up can take 20 to 30 minutes. Matched only by my Amphicar. Many in the DeLorean community prefer '81s as those were actually built by DeLorean. The '83s were assembled post-bankruptcy by the liquidation company to get whatever value they could recover from partially made cars and extra parts that remained in inventory. They sometimes have quality problems as a result of assembly that may have been done with less care and/or by less-trained teams. In addition, the '83s have a thick undercarriage coating that is a mess to work on. The 15xxx, 16xxx (like this one) and 17xxx VINs were legally '83 models completed by the factory while in receivership, but still under the auspices of DMC/DMCL. \r\n\r\nThe 20xxx cars (also considered '83 models) were cars that were on the line, partially completed, in May 1982 when the last round of line worker layoffs occurred. When Consolidated stepped in after JZD's arrest, they acquired the unsold cars still in Belfast and bought the remaining spares and cars on the line. \r\n\r\nThen they brought back foremen and senior staff (based on their original employment dates) as the most experienced staff to complete these cars. Having driven hundreds of DeLorean cars - all mileages, all model years and production date ranges from the first month to the very last car - I can say that these '83 model year cars had the best initial build quality and certainly the most running production improvements (over 3000 from start to finish from VIN 500 to VIN 20104). \r\n\r\nMany DeLoreans after 40 years, and some with numerous owners, will show some outliers on both ends of the spectrum, of course.
