What wonderful cars they were! I was very active on Preludezone.com as badman12345 on the off chance anyone from there is also on here and remembers me... what a great community that was too. A guy named Nick from north Jersey drove over an hour down to to where I live just to help me replace a clutch and flywheel... never met in person before... he came down with a promise of homemade Italian food and nothing else, and he helped me save about $700 one weekend. I digress...\r\n\r\nThe ATTS was indeed not a very desirable option, at least by the time I got into the community (about '06-'07 I believe... can't remember to be honest!). When it worked, it worked great and truly made the car handle fantastically, combating understeer admirably for a fairly powerful (for the time) FWD car. The main complaint was that it was very heavy, adding a lot of curb weight to the car. They also had a habit of dying and then simply becoming dead weight hanging there. Many people came up with modifications that made deletion possible, but that was not an easy undertaking. It's not a traditional limited slip differential... rather more like a small automatic transmission that sits on the opposite side of the motor from the lovely 5 speed manual. It also had 2 coolant lines that went to/from it which were a MAJOR pain in the rear to get to from under the car if I remember correctly from my clutch job mentioned before. To delete it, you needed to drop it out, plug or loop the coolant lines, remove its control unit (I think... I can't remember to be honest lol... I think it had its own control unit!), replace the transmission with a non-SH one, and install a custom axle half shaft in its place where there was never meant to be one.... IN YOUR ENGINE BLOCK! Yes... you had to drill into your engine block, and mount this half shaft... and I believe many people did this by hand, under a car in their driveway. As daunting of a task as that was, many a young driveway mechanic undertook it anyway. That should tell you something. Google ATTS delete.... you'll see.\r\n\r\nNOW... that said, I personally never had a single problem with my ATTS, and I wasn't worried about shaving weight or anything like that... I didn't cross mine or anything. On the contrary... I beat the hell out of it.... and it LOVED it. That H22 motor is a thing of beauty when it comes alive and screams at you. First Honda where I ever TRULY experienced the cliched \"VTEC just kicked in yo!\"... you felt it when it hit in this car... somewhere in the 5200 range if I remember correctly, and then you'd wring it all the way out to 7000 rpm+... and you were dead inside if you didn't want to just keep doing it over and over again. I had a 7lb (!) flywheel in mine when I did my clutch/flywheel install... safety from shattering flywheels be damned... uphills be damned.... that thing rev'd like a motorcycle lol.\r\n\r\nFor me, eventually the head gasket went and that was the nail in the coffin. It was beat to hell and I couldn't justify dumping any more money into it... I had a baby on the way and was in the middle of a move which was difficult enough without taking a non-running car with me. I actually signed it over to a very good Honda head friend of mine, and he assured me it would get a good second life as a track car. Not sure where it is now... but I do sometimes still miss it. \r\n\r\nAlso, for what it's worth (and moot since they aren't even on this example), the stock Type SH wheel was in my opinion one of the most attractive OEM wheels on any non-BMW car.\r\n\r\nA couple notes to prospective buyers:\r\n1) It NEEDS premium fuel. 92+ I believe according to the manual. Don't poo poo this... it WILL knock on you without it. The ECU should technically be able to adjust to something lower... but don't... just don't. The thing is 10.6:1 compression ratio which was VERY impressive for the time.\r\n2) Be careful with the boost. As mentioned above, the N/A compression ratio is already very high on this motor. You really can't add a lot of boost on these with stock internals, and therein lies another little surprise for those that want to just replace the stock internals with lower compression ones for boost purposes.\r\n3) Buying lower compression ratio pistons is a possibility if you want to boost more... HOWEVER, you must be careful with the material they are made out of. The bottom end of the H22A4 has FRM lined cylinder sleeves which do NOT play well with many aftermarket pistons metallurgically. You need to either buy pistons that are marketted as compatible with the sleeves (which was costly at the time if I remember correctly), or you need to bore them out altogether and replace them with aftermarket iron sleeves (there are other options too).\r\n4) The aftermarket part options for this car are definitely harder to come by, and fairly decently more expensive than their other Honda counterparts i.e. Civics and Integras. The H22 never had the market penetration that the B-Series engines did first of all, and second of all it's important to remember that the Prelude was considered a sports car in Honda's lineup. It already had much better suspension components than the Civics and even (non-GSR/ITR) Integras of the time, and it was used as something of a test-bed for new Honda technologies (4WS in the 3rd generation, and then the ATTS in the 5th generation come to mind... the ATTS/Type-SH went on to be featured in a few Acura SUV's I believe... if not in technology then at least in name). This all amounted to expensive upgrade parts, or ones that weren't really upgrades at all.\r\n5) It IS an interference motor, and it DOES have a timing belt rather than a chain. Mileage is low enough that I probably wouldn't worry about it since it seems like it's been driven a bit over the years... but it's still probably 18 years old now (I doubt it's been replaced with those low miles) and something you should probably budget for at some point. \r\n\r\nWith all of the above said, if I was in the market for a FWD 90s-00s coupe... I'd pick another one of these up in a heartbeat... over just about anything else you could compare it to. These cars were AMAZING fun. Go back to the late '90s to mid '00s autocross result sheets and you'll see these cars all over the leaderboards... both SH models and Base models.\r\n\r\nAlso worth noting the insanely low mileage of this car should serve you well, and the Jackson Racing Supercharger was a very common and well supported modification... not like some ebay special that couldn't be trusted. I would think with the proper tune, care, and maintenance, you could drive this car every day for the next decade or three without major issue. \r\n\r\nWhoever wins this car, I suggest you immerse yourself in the Prelude community. Not necessarily the Honda community (although that's not a bad group either), but the Prelude community specifically... they're a somewhat different group than your typical Honda nut. When I was in the community the big ones were PreludePower and PreludeZone. I preferred PreludeZone personally. Here is some background info from that experience. This was 20 years ago so take the following with a grain of salt.:\r\n-Basics. The JR kit uses an Eaton M62 blower for most Honda applications. Miatas get the smaller M45 blower, I believe. Honda kits run 6 lb boost but upgrade pulleys are out there that will raise the boost to 8-10 pounds. But I don't think this would be wise with the stock compression ratio and internals.\r\n-Fuel management. My system relied on an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and a resistor on the intake temp sensor that made the car run richer all the time. There was also a timing retard control that could be adjusted from inside the cabin. These were the JR solutions to knock management in 2000. JR started using their \"PowerCards\" for fuel and timing management not long after I got my system, and I believe this provided a vastly superior engine management solution. Not up there with stand-alone ECUs but much better than the patchwork of fixes used with the kit I had. Based on the seller's comments about \"engine management modules\" in the glove box, I assume the setup on this car uses the PowerCards. A photo of the \"engine management modules\" would be helpful.\r\nReliability: My supercharger nose bearing failed after around 20K miles (IIRC). I was able to ship the blower to Magnusun (or possibly Eaton) in Canada for a rebuild under warranty, I never had any boost related mechanical issues with the drive train while the supercharger was installed. \r\nClutch: JR highly recommended a clutch upgrade. I upgraded my clutch with one from ACT with a higher spring rate. Pedal effort was still very reasonable, although I did have a bit of clutch chatter from time to time. \r\nPerformance: In factory tune, I ran 15.6-15.8 in the quarter mile. With a JR charger and upgraded exhaust system quarter mile times dropped to the mid to high 14s. But the driving experience was night and day. In stock form the B16 was pretty gutless until you hit around 5500 RPM when VTEC engaged. But with the supercharger, the car had serious low-rpm acceleration. It was tons of fun to drive.\r\nTiming belt: While this is not a supercharger-related topic, it is worth noting that timing belts have a recommended service life based on time as well as mileage. And a belt can look almost new long after the time or mileage is exceeded. There is no way to judge the integrity of the timing belt by a visual inspection. This one should be changed as soon as possible. It is most likely to fail at higher RPM when vtec will be engaged and the high cams will be pushing the valves, resulting in serious internal damage. Ask me how I know all this.
