This one does have the code for a 170. The engine codes for Econolines through 1967 are: 144 = S; 170 = T (1961-65) or F (1966-67); 200 = G (1965-67); 240 = J (1965) or A (1966-67).\n\nOne advantage of the 1965 models is that all of them with manual transmissions had the Model 303 full synchromesh 3-speed that is a \u2018top-loader\u2019. It does share its basic design with the four-speed top-loader. That standardization came about in 1963. Prior to that the transmission was a weaker unit that did not have synchromesh on low gear and in a very few cases the Dagenham four-speed. For 1965 all of the manual transmissions had the VIN code A and all were the 303, however the 170 engines had a transmission with lower first and second gear ratios than those with the 240 engine. The transmission ratios were 170 = 3.41, 1.86, 1.0 and 240 = 2.99, 1.75, 1.0. I don\u2019t know which one the 200 engine came with. With a 170 engine the 303 transmission should be bullet-proof. One advantage of the 240 transmission is that the gear ratios are better suited when a V8 swap is performed.\n\nThe axle code 03 is a 3.50:1 7.25\" integral carrier unit used with lighter GVW and smaller engine Econolines. The 3,600 pound GVW on this one is at the low end of the scale but it will have a much better ride. And that\u2019s probably all that was needed for hauling matresses.\n\nAnother advantage of the 1965-67 Econolines is that they all had the larger engine housing that the 240 engine required. An easy way to identify that housing in a pickup is by the hump at the front edge of the bed that is there to clear the 240 bell housing. The vans also have that little hump at the back of the engine housing but it\u2019s obviously inside the vehicle. In the underside shot of the transmission you can see that there\u2019s a lot of air space around the 170 bell housing while the 240 really fills up that space. Excellent underside shots here, by the way!\n\nThe 1965-67 E\u2019lines also had the heavier engine mount needed by the 240 regardless of what engine it came with. The earlier models with 144/170 engines had a stamped steel cantilever arm coming in from the floor pan on either side of the engine to which the engine mounts were attached. The 240 required a heavier tube mount that went from side to side under the engine. That mount is visible on this pickup.\n\nThe larger engine housing and 240 engine mount are the ones to use for a V8 swap, although the smaller engine housing can be made to work. I\u2019m not recommending a swap on this one, it\u2019s much too nice. But the first thing I check when I see a candidate for parts is whether it has the hump at the back of the engine housing. If so, the engine housing and engine mount are the first order of business.\n\nThe only thing this one doesn\u2019t have that\u2019s a good addition is the dual-circuit master cylinder that I believe was 1967 only.\n\nThis is a very nice and well preserved example that should be an excellent driver. Online information says there were between 2,00 and 2,500 Spring Specials sold and that the package included $251.90 of extras that the dealer wasn\u2019t charged for. Racing stripes on the rockers and a tonneau cover were optional. http://econoline.org/spring_special.shtml The tear in the floor mat isn\u2019t a big deal to me; it\u2019s amazing the floor mat has survived at all. The only suggestion I\u2019d make is that there wouldn\u2019t be ink stains on the driver\u2019s seat if you\u2019d quit poking it with a ballpoint pen. On the econoline the inside of the cab, the roof, front grill, bed sides and tail gate are all single wall. If any body work was done you would be able to see it on the back side. This has no indication of that, actually pretty amazing. \r\nI will post more pictures later today of the back side of the panels. \r\nThe engine and transmission were rebuilt and have no oil leaks, as far as consumption I haven\u2019t put enough miles on it to check that. It runs very smooth no smoke. The gauges do work as do the wipers and headlights. The suspension looks stock the shocks, brakes, wheel bearings and brake line are all new. The brakes are four wheel factory drum brakes, stops straight. The gas tank was cleaned, new fuel lines and fuel pump, the carb was rebuilt and adjusted. The Americans knew how to up their game with the torquey sixes and made legends by stuffing them with V8s. My Dodge has a 318 and a 727 automatic and will flat get it. Smoke 'em if you got 'em. The little red wagon lives!!\r\n\r\nCab over trucks and vans are a hoot to drive. You become the surveyor of all things ahead (and over your shoulder to make eye contact with the driver next to you), the upright seating posture gives you the feeling of being in command as you row the flat wheel through the turns, before exiting check your position in the parking space to avoid having to get back in and pull forward another few feet. It was present on all of the early Econolines I\u2019ve had and it helps direct air into the radiator rather than letting it spill out the bottom. I think they also helped keep the engine housing cooler even if you weren\u2019t having overheating problems \u2013 the more air that goes through the rad, the more that gets circulated through the engine housing. Even air heated by the rad is cooler than stagnant engine-heated air in the engine housing. Maybe I\u2019m disoriented in the way I\u2019m viewing the picture and the panel is there.\r\n\r\n@HenryC \u2013 The first car I bought was the black Mini and, as you know, I still have it. The second car I bought was a rusty \u201865 Econoline quickly followed by an unrusted \u201961 to tow the Mini to autocrosses and the occasional Mini Meet. Once I built the Mini trailer I sold the Econoline in 1979 because it was rusting after seven years of continuous use. A first-year Econoline lasting 18 years in Western Pennsylvania was probably a record. Now I have two more Econolines, a pickup and a pop-top Travelwagon. All are in this folder: https://www.pinterest.com/snmminis/vans/ The pictures of the yellow van with two Minis (the black Cooper and a brown S) are at one of the Dayton Mini Meets in the 70s. My dad drove the brown S there, I flat-towed the black car and the unfinished Mini trailer was inside the van. The Econoline worked for a living towing and hauling stuff. From Pittsburgh I drove it as far east as Virginia Beach and Montreal (on separate trips) and as far west as Grand Junction.\r\n\r\nNose damage on these was fairly common and the wrinkling on the back side of this one doesn\u2019t look too serious. One window van I had in the 70s had the entire nose panel replaced; the label for the Ford dealer in Pittsburgh that sold the panel was visible on the inside. The new panel had two holes in it for the windshield washers although my van never had washers. If a vehicle had washers they had to function to pass the annual Pennsylvania state inspection and several times the inspection stations tried to fail mine because of the two empty holes on the nose. I\u2019d show them the sticker in the nose and the fact that there were no mounting holes for the foot operated pump and other pieces and they would relent. I finally got a washer system out of one in a wrecking yard. Trucks had to have flags and flares in them to pass the state inspection and one time when I called the Ford dealer on the phone to see if the inspection was finished they said the bill included $5.00 for a new parking brake handle and $110 for flags and flares \u201c . . . because all trucks have to have them.\u201d I asked him to read the vehicle type back to me from the registration card (I knew it said \u2018station wagon\u2019) and he almost immediately started shouting at someone in the shop to take the effing flags and flares out. The parking brake on these is at the front edge of the seat under the driver\u2019s right leg and pulls straight up vertically to engage. To release it you rotate the handle clockwise and hold it in that position while the handle goes down. When I picked the van up I found they had installed the handle 180 degrees off. It would pull up okay but when you tried to rotate it to release the brakes the backwards handle jammed into the seat frame and wouldn\u2019t go down. They had never tried it after replacing the handle but I did before I left the service area. So there it sat in front of the service desk with the parking brake jammed on. I have a feeling that the mechanic that got to remove the roll pin and turn the handle around \u2013 while the service manager and I watched - was the same one that had to remove the effing flags and flares.
