When I bought it in, I believe 1980, it had already had a competition history, converted to discs, cookie cutters, 12 volt, extra oil cooler, big seat belt mounts and extra holes cut in the dash ( probably for rally gear but the seller had no clue). My car had a worn non original motor that wore out and I replaced with the 912 that I have since rebuilt twice. I swapped the cookie cutters for real Fuchs with a neighour who had a bug...and now the car would be called an Otlaw..fine by me! My first Porsche was a 1952 pointed window coupe (that I bought as a 16 year old in 1966 for 200.00) that we had to reinforce the doors on at the hinges. When we took them apart, there were hand file marks in the bolt heads only allowing them to go in one way. There were chalk type marks and lines inside the doors from the factory. These cars were mostly hand built until 1959 when Porsche opened the new more automated factory in Zuffenhausen. Porsche always thought of these as fun sport cars rather than taking them as seriously as we do today. They were constantly tweeking and trying new things..........the differences that can be found are much more than many \u201cpurists\u201d would belive. Dr Porsche spent time in Dearborn with Henry Ford (Henry was buddies with Hitler as well) to study his methods of automated manufacturing that Porsche incorporated into his new factory design in 1959 (that time also produced the Convertible D while the factory was being rebuilt) that standardized the line much more than it had been prior. When you spend time at the Museum, you are struck by several things, how few models they actually built for production (although he had been heavily involved developing cars for other manufacturers) and how much experimentation they did to keep the cars on top of both the market and competition. Americans were the target market for Porsche, as few europeans had any money for the decade immediately following the war and even in defeat,the Germans liked the Americans for the most part. I agree- this is the perfect 'drivers' Speedster. I was lucky enough to find and buy a 'barn find' 1956 Speedster in 1986. It took me six years to talk the owner into selling me the Speedster. It had been 'restored' in the 70's (some rust repair- but with flat sheet metal, as replacement panels were still way in the future), and it had a hopped-up 1965 SC engine, transmission, disc brakes and 5 1/2\" chrome rims. I cleaned out the gas tank, fuel lines, rebuilt the carbs and 'unstuck' the brake calipers, and drove the heck out of it for 10 years. Oh, and I permanently removed the top. It was an absolute blast to drive! I would drive it rain (with no top) or shine to work every Friday. Normally, it would take me 20 minutes to get to work, but some Fridays, it would take me an extra 3 hours - as I would drive from San Jose to Carmel, and back to San Jose! After my stewardship, I sold the Speedster to my dad, who had owned many Porsches, but never a Speedster. After his ownership, I believe it was sold to someone that shipped it to Europe to be restored...I would love to buy the Kirby Speedster- and drive it exactly as is (after removing the top, of course).
