It was a faithful and reliable ride, once you mastered the cold start drill. Hot starts were generally a one or two kick process. Vibration damage to the fenders was the only problem, I added curved eighth-inch thick aluminum strips to the underside of both fenders and that stopped the cracking, but I had to drill bolt holes in the fenders. I only rode it about 5 miles when I first obtained the bike.\r\n- I like my bikes to be survivors. As far as I can tell, this is a pretty stock bike.\r\n- The tank is the real gem of the bike. It appears to be original paint and is NOT dented, which is a rare find.\r\n- I'm no expert, but I know what I like: survivors and unrestored, some patina and only changes made in it's day.\r\n\r\nHere is a cold start video. There are some details that indicate to me that this may not be an original Victor Special, but rather a 441 Shooting Star (the road-going version of the 441) that was converted to enduro spec at some point.\r\n\r\nThe engine serial number ends in SS, which would be correct for a '69-'70 Shooting Star. Victor engine serial numbers would have ended in VS. The headlight is the larger Lucas SS700 unit (as used on Shooting Stars), rather than the smaller MCH66 that would've been standard on Victor Specials. The high-pipe exhaust is fixed to the frame above the rear passenger footpeg with a chrome clamp. 441 Victor Specials had a lug welded to the frame in this location, to support the exhaust. Shooting Stars used a low-level exhaust which didn't require the lug. The footpegs on this bike are the \"fixed\" style, used on the SS. Victors used folding footpegs. Lastly, center stands weren't used on Victor Specials (because of ground clearance), but were included on the SS. The center stand on this bike appears correct factory-style for a Shooting Star.\r\n\r\nI own a 441 Shooting Star that was converted to Victor spec at some point prior to my ownership. I suspect the same was done to this bike. That said, it appears to be a well-sorted, good-looking 441. I love the MX treads! These are underrated bikes, IMO. A good friend had one from 1970 on for about eight years. There was only a side stand on the Victors, and a small headlamp. It always started well, if you knew how by using the compression release and letting the flywheel do the work. The same with any large single. The down side with these, which was cured on the B 50, was the bottom end. The bottom end on this is essentially from the B25, so not very robust. They also tend to go through a bore about every 4000 miles, which wasn't really a huge deal on an Enduro machine. Most people get it wrong); I'd replace that large chrome headlamp with the smaller, black Victor unit, and those tiller handlebars with the correct semi-\"buckhorn\" bars both the Victor and the Shooting Star came with.
