We sold the car in 2016 for the recent owner's family. The car lived the majority of its life in Southern California. The first owner had the car all the way until 2002. He then sold it to a well-respected BMW shop owner in San Diego. That owner then retired to Colorado and took the car with him. He did the majority of the cosmetic restoration himself. The car was very dry and straight...which was why he bought it. He then sold it to a good friend in Colorado who did the engine transplant. The engine was from a late 80's 735i/E32 that had low miles. Shortly after that owner finished the mechanical work, he sold it to our local Porsche Club friend here in Orange County (Jan 2014). He drove the car only 500-miles before falling ill and eventually passing away...which is why we were asked by the family to help sell it. Basically, outside of SoCal, it was in Colorado for about 8-years/7k-miles before we sold it to the current owner in NJ. I know the owner we sold it for did about $6k of work with a well respected OC BMW specialist. This is a really solid and well-sorted E9 that is very dry. I hope this helps. I was surprised to see it for sale so soon. That includes the AC face plate, the AC fan switch, the AC face plate, the console sides (which are different in many ways), and the AC side vents (which are almost always cracked). It does look like the evaporator box is missing behind the AC vents however. Those are a bit tricky to find but you can locate one for around $300. Everything on the engine side can be sourced from late model cars, including more efficient rotary compressor.\r\n\r\nWith a few legacy parts and a nut for the cam, you can use an old distributor on a B35 engine. The engine is a common example in these cars; the flow of coolant within the engine and the mechanism for initiating the radiator fan were improved in years after this car was manufactured. When repairing an engine that has been severely overheated, one never goes back to the original specification. Instead, a later M30 head is always employed, along with the improved water pump/fan clutch. Or the engine is swapped for a M30b35. BTW, the front fenders are not welded on, the front fenders are bolted on and the front seams along the top edge were leaded over at the factory (same as in the 2002). The real problem is that nobody is currently making a lot of replacement steel for these cars so you have to repair or fabricate panels. (This is why I'm currently restoring an E10 instead of an E9.) Look up Wallothnesch for parts for this and a lot of other german cars. If they don't have the body part, it can't be got. This is why it is important not to buy a rusty E9. I am a serial e9 owner, and for sure the engine swap here is a huge value boost, not a deduciton. If you pull a 2.8 from one of these, you will find there is zero market for 2.8s. You might get 500 bucks for a used 2800 motor, if you can find someone to take it off your hands. Yes, a restored 3.0csi has more intrinsic value than a swapped 2800cs automatic (Just as a longnose 911s is worth more than a backdated 3.2), but functionally, the 3.5 swapped car is better. \nThose sway bars I have had on one of my e9s, and they are great. The lack of AC doesn't bother me too much, because with all four windows down, you get lots of air. And I live in Florida. The AC, no matter how cold you get it, only cools your right knee in my experience. Those two small vents in the center don't do much. \nLastly, although e9s, Pagodas, E-types, and early 911s can be found at similar price points, they are all totally different. First, an e9 is a four passenger grand touring coupe with room for luggage. Second, a Pagoda drives like a T-bird compared to an e9, particularly an e9 with the mods offered here. But the Pagaoda is the better built car for sure (overbuilt!). \n A 911 is a small live wire (and wonderful), and better built than an e9.
