I picked up a 740 Turbo wagon in Gothenburg in June of 1990, and still have it. Mine is a 5 speed manual with a Turbo Plus kit. Cosmetically, this one is in much better shape than mine, though not the seats-----I deliberately picked the cloth seating for longevity, and that has proven to be the case. As to not passing emissions, the catalytic converter is probably shot. Mine is, and upon start up it smells like a car from the fifties or sixties until the engine warms up. The foam padding used in the air conditioning ducts deteriorates over time and blows out the AC vents.. That explains the little particles you see above the steering wheel airbag housing. It's no biggie----the AC works fine without it. Overall, this looks like a very attractive 740 Turbo wagon. This was a ONE California owner car till I purchased it several months ago. The car was sold due to lack of use. The entire car is 100% original including interior and paint. It was cared for by Volvo specialists. I could not get the full set of records, however was able to get reprints from one shop (Scandia Volvo shop since I know the owner there). I own property in Oregon and I was keeping the car in there. It is now in California near me as I conduct the sale. \r\nThe car is in perfect mechanical condition, I replaced the timing belt and fluids. I was planning to do a manual swap however I have no time which is why I am selling the car. Everything works as designed besides the sunroof slide function. There are no leaks or water intrusion. The Volvo passed CA smog test in 2017 and has not been tested since due to it not being used. It was only been driven around 1500 miles since the last smog test. It was not tested since as there was no need. The car will be California smog tested and certified if the winning bidder is a California buyer. The switch that is mounted in the pocket on the outside of the seat has a tendency to go bad from use. Much like the window switches, the contacts burn and quit. They are easily cleaned with a small screwdriver. The other problem is that the seat motors drive cables, similar to speedo cables, for those old enough to be remember them. The cables are housed inside plastic tubing that over time will stretch. The 850 seat backs have the same problem. To repair them, the plastic tubing needs to be shortened. What happens is the longer housing makes the cable shorter and the ends pull out of the motor.
