The V4 engine did not have hardened valve seats. So it was not designed to run on unleaded fuel. If the next owner expects to do much hard or high speed driving, they will need to install hardened exhaust valve seats in the heads. \n2. From 1971 in the US, the V4 was tuned to run on regular 87-octane gasoline. It is a 1.7-liter engine producing 65 SAE horsepower. The 1967-70 US engines displaced 1.5 liters, produced 73 SAE horsepower, and ran on premium fuel. European models stayed with the 1.5 engine through the end of production in 1980. \n@glorybe Our experience in our family (various members owned 1960, 1965, \u201866, \u201868, \u201870, \u201871 and \u201872 models in period) was that the cars did not drive the same through the years. They really evolved, and not always for the better. \nThe two-strokes and early V4s with 1.5 engines, quick steering of just 2.25 turns lock to lock, and non-assisted brakes were the most fun, most engaging, and, due to their spring and shock absorber tuning, best-riding. \nIn 1969 Saab went to 2.75 turns lock-to-lock on the steering, and added a power brake booster. In a way the cars were easier to drive, but subtly more insulated and less exciting. \nIn 1970, the switch from Solex to FoMoCo carburetor with deceleration valve further blunted the driving experience but allowed the 1.5 engine to meet stricter emission standards while maintaining the 73 horsepower rating. Somehow the engine felt a little stifled, because it was. \nIn 1971 Saab adjusted spring rates upward, resulting in a firmer ride. Saab went to all-vinyl upholstery in the US for the 95 & 96, and switched to the 1.7 engine. A new radiator and the seven-bladed fan first used, I believe, in 1970 helped cooling, but that fan produced noticeably more noise. My mom said it sounded like a coffee grinder, and she wasn\u2019t pleased. The 1.7 engine\u2019s tuning produced significantly better low-end torque and was nowhere near as rev-happy as the 1.5. Combined with all the other changes including the industrial-look dashboard that debuted in 1970, the 1.7 turned the 95 and 96 into much more appliance-like cars than the early versions. They\u2019re still tremendous fun, and the 1971-73 models were frankly better built and better rustproofed than the earlier cars. But they lost a bit of the old excitement. \nStill, these are some of the best Saabs, and best cars, ever built. This particular example is one I\u2019d love to own. Low mileage, unmolested, really like a new car of its era. What could be better? Someone will get a very special car of a bygone age, a true marvel of elegant, thoughtful engineering and outstanding driving qualities. I owned several 1967s and 1968s, briefly a 1973 and 1972? 95. And I drove others of various years. The most I paid was $800 in 1972 for a pristine 1968 DeLuxe. The others were in the $300 to $500 range. To me the 'newer' ones drove basically the same with similar dynamics and weight but they felt a little newer, a little more refined which I agree is not necessarily better. It was good to learn the specific changes at work over the years. I don't think I ever noticed the steering ratio change which surprises me. \r\nFor those unfamiliar with them, basically Saab 96s are 911s and Beetles turned backwards with the engine now well forward of the front wheel centerline as it is aft of the 911/Beetle rear wheel centerline. In both cases the engine is hanging way out there. They both provide fun and competent handling in vastly different ways. \r\nAs far as freewheeling goes I generally like compression braking so almost always had fw disengaged so it drove like a regular car. Let off the gas and the car slows due to compression braking acting on the two front wheels only. My understanding is most rally drivers even in the V4s (where lubrication isn't an issue) would engage freewheel so that any and all braking would come via the pedal and act on all 4 wheels, e brake turns excluded. Add left foot braking and a snowy country road and you're ready to enjoy the full Saab 96 experience. The 4 spd column shift is a dream and the pedals are perfect for heel and toe downshifting when not in fw. The car is very spacious for a driver of any size. Carlsson was not a small man!\r\nDefinitely a lot to like with this car. The problem I have with it (other than the cost) is that it's too good to take on sloppy winter drives. 96s are a blast to drive in winter and I just couldn't leave it alone.
