The radial tuned suspension badge between the Speedo and Tach Not on early cars. 2. The early cars had chrome bezels around the instruments not black \u2013 this was changed along with the backside of the rear view mirror due to \u201canti-glare\u201d government regulations. Can\u2019t see the mirror very well but it looks like a later model unit.\n\nAll of the seat belt comments are correct as is the front console statement.\n\nThe wheels. While the general statement made is correct the sizes are wrong. Pontiac wanted the TA to have 15\u201d wheels but had none available. So a 14\u201d center was used with a 1 inch band to measure out to 15\u201d.\n\nThe correct center caps are red.\n\nHood scoop did not have decals for the base TA.\n\nThe parking light surrounds \u2013 all were not painted white, this varied from different plants of manufacture.\n\nThe exhaust, as previously mentioned, is way wrong. The reason behind the transverse muffler was ground clearance. The system currently on this car will most likely drag at any small speed bump.\n\nAs \u201chemi\u201d stated the carb should be a 7040273 unit. I had a long discussion with a national Pontiac club judge about this very issue. He contended it was not a ram-air engine (which it clearly is) and therefore got the smaller cfm unit. That's fewer than the number of Pontiac dealers that existed back then, so many dealers didn't sell even one of these. Therefore seems like a pretty good chance if you saw a white one at this dealer... it was this car.\r\n\r\n@phw... the black rings around the gauges are not necessarily incorrect on a '70 T/A. While chrome was clearly what they were supposed to have had based on brochure images, etc., only about half the cars produced got them (this occurred at both plants that produced them). Probably a supply issue, but who knows. That doesn't change the fact that this is not the original dash bezel, though. Another tell is the area around the headlamp / washer indicator ... the 70-72 bezels had these two split horizontally; this car has the later style single opening.\r\n\r\nPretty common to see the sort of discrepancies folks are noting on this car. The '70 model had a lot of \"one year only\" parts, and few of these cars were built - so not many parts around. Even in cases where the 71/72 models shared parts... even fewer of those were made. But the Trans Am is really different, with add-on fender fairings and a reverse hood scoop. Not well known is that the Trans Am features were actually done by aerodynamicist, Paul Lamar, If you don\u2019t know that name, the Internet will tell you more. He actually is a co-inventor of the moveable wing for race cars, used on Jim Hall\u2019s Chaparral.\n\nBut the suspension tuning is another big difference from the 1970 Camaro Z28, although the plan was to make them the same. The reason they ended up with a different setup was because of Herb Adams\n\nHerb was head of a small team at Pontiac and pleaded for a chance to make the handling on the Trans Am better. It fell on deaf ears, but he kept pushing. Late one week, his boss, Bill Collins, who later became engineering chief at DeLorean Motor Company, asked Herb, what can you do? Herb told Collins he could get to .8G on a skid pad. Bill said to Herb, if you can get to .8G by next Monday, I will fight for it. \n\nHerb and one of his team, Dan Hardin, spent the weekend at the GM Proving Ground with a technician and a collection of springs, sway bars, and jounce bumpers. In 1966, the SCCA created a racing series for pony cars, using FIA homologation rules for touring cars, requiring 100 production units. Pre-1970, manufacturers had to produce a minimum of 100 vehicles under 5 liters (305 CID), but beginning in 1970, manufacturers could de-stroke production motors, which meant this Firebird could be turned into a legal race car. The series was named the Trans-American Sedan Championship, or Trans-Am, for short. \r\n\r\nIn 1969, when the Pontiac Trans Am was a low-volume option, the $5.00 per car royalty (remember, we are talking 1970 dollars here) didn't seem like much. Beginning with the success of the 1970 second generation, after a few years it added up to a big enough bill that Pontiac eventually renegotiated the royalty amount. But for years it was a huge windfall for SCCA. \r\n\r\nThere is a detail about this that might win you a bet. Technically, (you have to be a bit OCD) the car name isn't named after the series. The series name has always been written with a hyphen, as in \"Trans-Am\", but in the Pontiac car name there is no hyphen.\r\n\r\nPontiac, particularly Herb Adams' group, was optimistic about the car's chances in the 1970 Trans-Am series, and was providing help and parts to Jerry Titus' team (all legitimately budgeted, but kept hidden from GM Corporate). Unfortunately, it ended in tragedy with Titus' fatal accident at Elkhart Lake. \r\n\r\nThe following year Herb and some co-workers turned his wife's '64 Tempest into a Trans-Am racer, which used most of the 1970 Firebird front suspension adapted to the Tempest frame. With Bob Tullius driving, it achieved almost as much publicity as the Penske Javelin. In 1972 the team did build a Firebird, built from a 1970 wreck, and at Mid-Ohio, with Milt Minter driving, it led from the pole to give the Pontiac Trans Am its first Trans-Am win.
