Here is the really fun back story:\r\n\r\nThe car was bought new and was Euro delivery for an NA spec car. Johann, an Austrian father, picked up the car and took it for a 10k mile European road trip. Johann was clearly very particular about his cars and his record keeping was incredible. Every single dollar spent on the car was recorded. After it was shipped back home to California, he even spent time writing letters to the shipper to discuss his distaste for the film left by the ocean on some trim and insisted it must be changed out at the cost of $597.87. It was. \r\n\r\nHe continued to drive this among his other Mercedes and collected receipts for every thing. In the mid-90s, he sold the car to his daughter Helen. Helen made the word fastidious seem like a joke for Johann. Her records are unlike anything I may have ever seen in a car before. She recorded EVERYTHING. Phone conversations are recorded verbatim. When it came time to have the car painted she interviewed 20 body shops with notes. But while these are interesting, the service records are unreal too. I stopped counting at $50k in service. Everything and anything the car needed it always received. In recent service along there was a $6k bill. The folders are taller than New York phone book. \r\n\r\nWhen the first service book ran out of space for the mechanics to stamp it, a letter was written intermediately to Mercedes to make sure she would receive a new book in time before her next upcoming service as not to miss the stamp. The car took it road trips all over and the stamps continued to mount even in the new book. \r\n\r\nIt has been utterly fascinating to read and create an image and character of Helen for me. She though for reasons unknown to me decided it was time to move to Austria, and liquidated her estate. My client was given word about the car and fell in love with the story and proceeded to buy the car to take it on a proper trip as a tip of the hat to Johann and Helen. All around the West Coast of the US the car traveled and was photoed. He met interesting people, found other car road trippers, and brought the car from beach to mountains, Golden Gate to the Sierras. The car didn't fail once. Now feeling like he did his part for the car and the family, here it sits, hoping that the same legacy will be continued. \r\n\r\nMake sure to take a look of the sampling of notes. They are the best. It is about an inch long and has virtually no depth. You could do an easy repair if you wanted by pulling the strip back a little, a little sand paper, spot prime and touch up paint brush it in. If you really wanted to go nuts, you could paint the inner trunk jamb after some very light sanding, a hair of filler. It doesn't really have depth so metal repair would probably be over kill. Later I saw and photographed it at a Whole Food Market in Fremont, CA where we live. Soon after, it popped up on Craigslist listed for $20k. The ad read: \r\n\r\nThis classic beauty has been owned by one family (father 1969 - 1990s, daughter thereafter). It has never missed a service, and service records are available (very rare for used cars). Last spring it got a new battery, new tires, and a rebuilt transmission. It provides an excellent, comfortable, safe drive. It was built at a time when solid metal was used in manufacturing cars. Trunk and storage capacity is immense. All the extras available in 1969 were placed in the car - including a sliding roof.
