Great Bend, Kansas, summer of 1974. A local car dealer had a \u201972 Gremlin X on the lot, with 18,000 miles. Butterscotch Gold with white stripes. Beige buckets and aftermarket air even. I could make out headers peeking out from underneath the front end, and just had to stop. It had the 304 V8, which was built: Hooker headers, Offy 360 manifold, Holley 4 bbl, Crane Fireball cam. The previous owner had built it to race. These only came with either a 3 speed manual, or an automatic from the factory. This one had a Hurst shifted 4 speed out of an AMX. The car had languished on the lot for months, yet the salesman tried to talk me out of it (something about it being the wrong kind of car for a youth pastor. Yea, right). I gave him a rusted \u201967 Cougar and $ 600, and never looked back.\r\nThe Ansen mags were soon wearing T/A radials which filled out the wheel wells. Twin Thrush mufflers soon gave it the sweetest, most unexpected rumble you ever heard out of an early \u201870s economy car.\r\nDrove it for years as my daily driver, and it turned heads every day. Finally sold it out of the back pages of Hot Rod magazine four years later for a lot more than I paid for it.\r\nBeen a sports car guy for nearly 40 years now, but this was the most fun I ever had in American iron. We started with a clean but high-mileage base and absolutely zero option - ie - 6cyl/3-spd-stick/manual steering, non-power drum brakes and even a radio delete -'73 Gremlin that my buddy scored at a dealer wholesale auction for 900 dollars. Two months later it had a 4.57-geared 9-inch Ford rearend, a pair of bolt-on slapper bars augmented with a pair of air-shocks, a 4-spd tranny and a 360 AMC V8 with ported cylinder heads, a solid-lifter Crane cam and an Edelbrock cross-ram with two 600 cfm Holley carbs and we hit the streets with it!
