As you can image that car is forever imprinted/ingrained in my life. Even today I have a YouTube account \u2018Type5311\u2019 - the factory designation for Scirocco. Kept mine for over 180K miles and 14 years before I sold it because I didn\u2019t have time/money to keep it reliable enough for daily driving. Still have the original window sticker and other bits. This Germany market version is interesting. My 76 California Scirocco was saddled with California smog gear - air pump and EGR with a Zenith carb putting HP to 71( nearly 10% lower than this one). This 81 Scirocco apparently didn\u2019t have the USA standard VDO clock and voltmeter in the console. This 81 has a radio with matching dash trim plate; my 76 had an aftermarket dealer radio as zero radio (storage slot) was standard. As someone mentioned the wheels are 13\u201d, not 14\u201d. Surprisingly the front end for 1977 (my brother was same - new 77 Scirocco) lost the metal lip of my 76 in favor of ABS lip spoiler. This 81 front valence panel looks identical to to the USA 75/76 Scirocco. The USA models had different plaid upholstery than this German market 81. This car would be great to have as my nostalgia buttons are pushed. But sadly I have two cool cars that I drive already without time/money for this again. GLWS. - the car looks great and 100% original. Word of caution to California buyers - 1981 cars still require smog certification. Having been through all that for older 80s USA cars today,I recommend checking California Bureau of Automotive Repair to confirm it can be licensed for road use. Easy to maintain, fun to drive, lots to love. \r\n\r\nThis car is particularly well cared for but is quite an odd bird. 1981 was the last year of the first generation, with the wraparound front turn signals and the plastic bumpers. The Euro market bumpers are considerably smaller and lighter compared to the US versions, and when you are working with a 1.6-liter, cutting weight at both ends matter a lot!\r\n\r\nAnother interesting detail is the front valence panel with the molded spoiler - that disappeared on the US-market cars in 1976, I believe, so it is interesting that this 1981 German-market version still retains it. All of these Sciroccos were built at the Karmann factory in Osnabr\u00fcck regardless of the market they were sold in, so I'm really not sure what to say about that. \r\n\r\nThe interior and the seats are just in phenomenal shape. It doesn't hurt that it sat unused for so many years, avoiding wear and tear of daily driving. As others have stated, the console has plugs in the GT model where oil temperature and a clock would normally reside. Reminded me that there was a recall for leaking antenna gaskets. Water would run down antenna cable through defective gasket and drip onto the Bosch fuse box causing all sorts of problems. I brought it to the dealer and they simply applied some adhesive on a new gasket when reinstalling. Same exterior color, but it had a red interior and was a 5 speed, air conditioning, and the all important, bragging rights (at the time!) Blaupunkt radio /cassette! I tried to trade in what had been my first car, a 1972 Mach 1 Mustang, and the VW dealership declined. The gasoline crisis was in full swing, and muscle cars were OUT. I thought the car was a practical choice, and the A/C was critical as I was attending University in sweltering Waco, TX. I loved this little car. It was extremely spacious for a small car, and was sporty and very easy on fuel. Especially in those 55 MPH speed limit days. I drove it from 1979 through Graduate school in 1984. It really never missed a beat, save for a clutch being burned out by a college friend borrowing it for a quick drive when the car was nearly new. I had it towed to the dealer, and they diagnosed it (incorrectly) as a bad transmission. That was unfortunate, as this was 1979 and it took a month to get one over from Germany, as the 5 speed was evidently new to the car. When it finally! arrived, they informed me it was the clutch instead. So I had to be without wheels at 19 years old, for an excruciating month, that had really been unnecessary due to their incorrect diagnosis. That would be like taking a 19 year old's phone away for a month today! While in graduate school, after a party in which I was over served, to a very large degree, I struck a median while poorly executing a 90 degree turn at an intersection. I managed to break the oil pan, and three of the four motor mounts. After the repairs, the little car continued to run well, and look good doing it. So few of these have survived, and I am assuming it is due to rust. The only thing I ever noticed was that the hood was very easily dented, and that is about it. Great little car, handled well, ran well, economical, and looked great (relative to other 1979 alternatives) to boot. My Dad bought me some metric Craftsman tools, which I own to this day. I would put spark plugs in it occasionally, and set the points. Strikes me as a bit odd today that all of the US manufacturers were using electronic ignitions by that time, but in 1979 VW still had points. Oh well, it was very easy maintain. Looked sharp all washed and cleaned up. I was SO excited to see this on BAT, and quite surprised to see how well it is doing! Congrats to the seller and eventual buyer. This car gives me a visceral reaction. \r\n\r\nMy 10 years elder brother bought an 81 in Forest Green/Tan vinyl when I was 16. I fell in love instantly. He generously let me drive it more than I deserved at the time, including two long distance trips over the following few years. It was interesting in that it had a three gauge lower center console cluster instead of two, and also Snowflakes instead of the standard wheels. Not an S model, but seemed as fast as my classmate's 80 S, and I always wondered if it had something added in the motor department, as I think it was a dealer exec car.\r\n\r\n@griffbl My brother had the hot Blaupunkt Heidelberg head unit installed, plus the just as drool-worthy at the time 5 Band EQ/Amp in the center console. If only he had gone for the Berlin with the remote control on a flexible stalk. I thought it was the end of the world until a few years later, when I worked at a high end A/V store and Alpine blew Blaupunkt out of the water when they started cutting costs to try to outsell Alpine. I was utterly crushed, and then dumbfounded when a giant storm came the next day and knocked a giant oak tree over right onto the roof at a perfect 90 degree center punch. So much heartbreak. Only issue I had on the 77 was the electric fan (which only engaged at certain engine temperatures - this gave the engine a tad more power because there was no fan / fan belt) which was wired backwards at the factory. Warranty took care of that. Other then that - I put appx 40k on the 77, over 100k miles on the 79 with zero issues. Tight, solid, fast and neither leaked a drop of oil - especially the 79 when I traded it in for a new 86 BMW 325E which sucked - it had a newly introduced low rev 4 cylinder engine which redlined at 4k rpm. Definitely not as fast as the Sciroccos. Beat the piss out of both of the Roccos... and they took it. On the 79 I installed Bilstein gas shocks, had the coil springs cut to lower the car's profile for better handling, installed 22mm sway bars front/rear, 205 Pirelli P7's all the way around and added an air dam on the front. That thing handled like Porsche material - no lie.
