Just recovering the leather seats with Rolls quality Connolly Leather, Wilton wool carpets and refinishing the walnut burl wood would eat up $20k , then there's the paint another $20K plus , then the chrome and all the mechanical components, I think you can see where we're going to end up! \r\nIn summary it would be prudent to buy the best one you can find and save yourself a bunch of money and headache. And with the wood removed for your refinishing work, the electronic gauge has 4 screws to remove it and then it can be repaired (or sent out for repair), before reinstalling it and the refinished woodwork. And my understanding is the \"trip\" meter gets reset to \"0000\" after the gauge is refurbished (and the mileage can also be reset but isn't supposed to be without a noted declaration that goes with the work). \r\nSo I noticed the trip meter on this car is \"0000\" in all photos and videos, wondering whether the driver of the demo videos zeroed it out before and after the test run/drive by . . . otherwise why would it be \"0000\" if the gauge is working . . .?\r\n\r\nThe reason I ask is the engine compartment and the underside of the car don't look to be the result of only 22k miles of driving, IMHO; especially for a Rolls Royce, which would normally spend the balance of the 44 years not being driven 22k miles garaged in comfort, with caretakers of some sort keeping things clean and well-maintained. \r\n\r\nBottom line, there are usually a lot of rubber, plastic, cloth, etc. elements to a car like this suspension parts, bushings, etc. that usually do not last 40+ years without needing replacement. We removed the speedo today to find, as expected a brittle and broken internal plastic gear which we will replace this week. I doubt that this has been replaced before and we are sure that it was working when we first serviced the car some 7 or more years ago and has continued to work since then even though this car , as part of a collection of some 20+ cars has seen rather limited use under current ownership. As a footnote we did not remove the dash wood for refinishing but only the door caps which were refinished by Madera Concepts, who in our opinion are the best in the business. We think the condition of the interior probably gives the best clues that this must surely be a very low mileage car. We are trying to track down the history prior to 2016 but the current owner doesn't seem to have anything on file. We know that the car came from Park Ward Motors , IL and will try to find out more from the owner if we can reach him before the end of the auction. BUT this also suggests that the car was repainted at some earlier stage (maybe before the 2015 sale (?) to the \"ice green w/ olive top hat\" colors . . . so this would be at least the third paint job on the car. \r\n\r\nAlso noted is the overall condition evolved dramatically (downward) from those 2015 pics to now . . . no scratches on the interior upholstery; the engine compartment was clean enough to eat off of; no stains apparent on the roof of the car (and no dent/scratch on that side door) . . . Leaving Fido in the car while out shopping on Rodeo Drive might explain the upholstery damage, as well as the damage that necessitated the door woodwork refinishing . . .(?) . . . and perhaps the car was stored outside under an olive tree or privets or something, whose fruit/berries caused the roof stains . . and again, from my own experience, sadly, the mess in the engine compartment could have been rodents making their home under the hood and it just didn't get cleaned up before the photo shoot . . . Instead are 2, count 'em, two cam shaft driven hydraulic pumps that pressurize two seperate brake circuits attached to not one each but 2, count 'em two calipers on each front wheel for a total of 6. \n\nIn the early 60's when this car was under development disk brakes were mostly used on lightweight sports cars. Disk pads then in use wouldn't last long enough under a Shadow whose owners wouldn't likely abide by 12,000 mile brake jobs.. So Rolls spread the wear between two calipers per front wheel and a caliper each in back with a hydraulic circuit separate from the front systems.\n\nThe same Hydraulics that pressurize the brakes operate the nitrogen filled sphere hydro-pneumatic leveling system which was licensed from Citroen. \n\nThe Shadow is a complicated and almost living machine with hydraulic fluid coursing through its labyrinth of arteries and veins. The paint scheme was unofficially referred to back in the day as a Top Hat\u201d. Very old-school RR. \r\nAfter careful review of all the photographs, I am very convinced, although obviously not 100% positive without actual inspection, that this paint work is largely, if not completely ORIGINAL!! The big \u201ctell\u201d is that all of the Crewe applied pinstriping is original. That would make the entire top of the car original paint. The fact that there is slight paint discrepancy on the side panels is quite frankly how they were received from the factory. Rolls-Royce had a process after final road testing of each car called \u201cpaint ratification\u201d. Translation: any flaws or damages from the roughly 100 mile factory testing would be re-sprayed, if hand or machine buffing would not rectify the matter. \r\n\r\nTo the point that a previous very esteemed proprietor of the Silver Shadow series had previously described the paint color Ice Green ( as opposed to Pewter) is an unfortunate misstep by an otherwise extraordinarily conscience devote and preserver of these special Rolls-Royces and Bentleys. (which brings up the question what large viewing device color corrected at high magnification are you using when you say you \"looked at all the pictures\" . . and did you take the time to go to the Sotheby's auction site in 2015 select photos of this car same view similar lighting and put them side-by-side on two separate monitors before making a judgment as I did?\r\n\r\n I don't know how to upload copies of those comparison pictures to this site during an auction (and if someone does and can tell me soon I can actually offer a half dozen comparison pairs of photos that are definitely different colors of the same car). the most obvious one and any of you can do this in five minutes or less is the data tag on the door jam in both sets of photos were taken with a flash which has full spectrum white light and reflects the true color back to the capturing device and the 2015 photo of the paint surrounding the data tag is definitely green not even close to silver and the current color is definitely silver or likely the proper pewter hue specified by the manufacturer .\r\n\r\nas for your theory that the pinstriping is original I don't believe that to be the case either -- if you look at photos 35 and 36 in this auction and zoom in at the division between the doors, you'll see that the pinstriping is erratic --it varies in width and varies in intensity. It looks to me like the guy doing the work just about ran out of paint and ended up putting a second layer both to the left into the right of the joint, making the width vary and the when he got to that joint and laid on a second stroke both to the left and to the right.
