It gave us no trouble in 21 years of vintage racing and over 8715 track miles. The MG box, which is actually from the MG Magnette ZA/ZB could be ordered with a set of close ratio gears, with almost the same ratios as the ZF, but sadly, no syncromesh in first gear. \r\n\r\n\r\nI forgot to mention, when the factory was unable to supply replacements for the full set of stainless steel bumpers and front oval, they offered glass fibre units for the bumpers only. \r\n\r\nToday, the full stainless set from the Harrington Group via Mk 14 Components is available and manufactured in Viet Nam. Remarkable quality. \r\n\r\nMany decades ago, one of the UK lads produced the front bumpers in cast alloy. Nicely done, a bit heavy, but they, in my experience, do not sparkle like the polished stainless steel bumpers. \r\n\r\nWill try to polish them, again, today, on my 10 inch dual buffing wheels. Very early cars had the windows in a vinyl pouch, residing in the boot.\r\n\r\nThe Girling brake and clutch master cylinders are easily accessible in the engine bay.\r\n\r\nThe metal hoop bonded into the GRP (glass re enforced plastic) that surrounds the windscreen and attached to the metal vertical door posts with a horizontal tube below the dash panel was sufficient for SCCA to allow the Elite to compete without a roll bar. \r\n\r\nThe front subframe, bonded in, carries the front suspension, radiator, steering rack and motor mounts. These two items are the only metal bonded into the CBU (chassis body unit), of which Lotus sold as requested and a complete CBU with doors, boot and bonnet lid can be purchased in the UK.\r\n\r\nBack to refurbishing some of our HS 4 SU carbs. and another attempt to polish up the cast alloy front bumpers. His shop in the East Bay usually has three or four Elites in residence two or three of which may be his. There are many things to recommend Mike. First the shop is his hobby shop not a business. Secondly he dispenses advice and help with an enthusiasm that borders on unbelievable, he periodically has Saturday gatherings for helping Elite owners with their particular problems or to socialize. The thing that warms my heart though is as much as he loves these cars he has no problem with modifying them. In fact one of his has a twin cam and I may be misremembering (Hell, I'm old) I seem to remember one with an automatic transmission. Elite bodies on stretched (4.125 inches) and re enforced Elan frames with our 15 inch wire wheels, fully adjustable suspension. The MK I has a FWB (1460 cc Lady Climax) in front of a Datsun 280 zx 5 speed and the MK II has a 1725 cc Lotus Twin Cam matched up to a C-4 (1971 Pinto Estate Wagon automatic) Getting a bit older now and will change out all the uprated road springs. These old bones desire a softer ride. \r\n\r\nBill Hutton, in Clarkesville, TN started Club Elite and the newsletter in March of 1971, when he returned from Lotus with all the surplus Type 14 parts and his new bride, Barbara. This Elite went ex works on Oct 23, 1962 to Ecurie Shirlee, invoice #ElC1143 if my bi focals are working, with Coventry Climax #FWE -xx- 10844, fitted with dual 1.5 inch SU's, 4 branch Derrington tubular exhaust manifold, ZF (never a ZF number in any of my records per car), LHD, black interior, red as original colour, white later, as Jim mentioned. Mileage as noted in the early 1980's at approx. 19K. Lotus did not supply a build sheet, in my experiences, only an invoice. Information gathered over time from past and current owners, only. I was quite comfortable in mine at 6 feet and 210 pounds, though not in an Elan Coupe which was way too tight in the shoulders. I think I even had the seat a notch or two from the back and the headroom was ample, even enough for a helmet and I am tall in the torso, not the legs.\r\n\r\nNow a few comments on this car: It has everything one could want in an Elite, although I would be content with twin SU's rather than Weber's. The ZF is transformative, as I had both it and the MG box in mine...the ZF is the very best transmission I have had in my 11 Lotus cars, even better than the fabled Elan box. This is one of the best factory colors on an Elite and has been advised on by Mike Ostrov. If you ever wanted one, get your bid paddle warmed up for this one. There were two standard blue colours. A very dark, almost purple and the lighter , sometimes called Robbins Egg or Periwinkle among the 6 or 7 standard colours. For 30 or 35 quid, Lotus would paint \"to customer's request\".\r\n\r\nI will examine the FWE Lady Climax block tomorrow when back to my hobby shop for the engine number. It is stamped on a lower vertical section of the block ,directly below the dynamo. Coventry Climax stamped all the FWA (1098 cc) and FWE (1216 cc) engines with the 4 or 5 digit engine number and a two digit center number denoting the factory state of tune, eg: FWE - 400 xx- xxxxx. Gold Seal were a very dodgy outfit I know to my cost. but they were full Lotus Dealers. The story as I know it is that when Lotus switched to the new Elan they still had a supply of Elite shells, but no more Coventry Climax engines. Elite #2001, the ex David Lazenby car was done in l976 when David was the ex Lotus chief mechanic and now the general manager of the racing division, hence the Lotus Components chassis plate. Chapman's permission and a company car for David. He even took it on his honeymoon. David also started Pace Oil Systems. Have talked with David many years ago. Always wanted to duplicate #2001 and have been saving #1586 RHD as are all my Elites, even converted one, so, as not to be alone, for this exercise. I have fitted my Lotus Twin Cam with close ratio gearbox many times. Have not done the brake/clutch pedal assembly. There are other Elites with a TC engine installed and one nice example by the lad that did the Elite workshop manual. \r\n\r\nYes, no bonnet nor boot support from the factory. The English Walnut blocks I use are brass hinged with a recess for the bonnet hinge to rest upon. \r\n\r\nSome lads have been very creative with hidden spring loaded bonnet supports. \r\n\r\nBack to boxing up some original Lucas 10 inch Rainbow wiper blades for a recent 100 pt Concours restoration. Being a 35+ year chief Concours de Elegance Judge, could not let him show the car without them.\r\n\r\nCheers.
