Back in 1972, I successfully drove one of these all the way from Miami FL to my home in Connecticut with a broken clutch. Every time I had to stop I would turn the engine off and put it into 1st gear, when it was time to go I would turn the key and the starter motor had enough power (thanks to that super low 1st gear) to get it going and I was able to up shift through all the gears sans clutch with no problem and did that for 1500 miles. Don't think I could have done that with any other car. Euro cars did not have directionals on the front fenders but instead used semaphores like those found on this car. Euro cars also didn't have over-riders on the bumpers like U.S. spec cars. Also, Euro cars had cloth upholstery vs. vinyl for U.S. cars. I believe the color on this car is known as Flint Gray (paint code L44) which would have had water blue upholstery with cloth seats. It appears the seating surfaces have been replaced from the original upholstery fabric which would have been more of a striped pattern. 1960 was an odd-ball year with a number of one-year only parts. It was the first year of push button door handles vs. \"ice pick\" handles which were used until 1959. The driver's door handle for 1960 had a vertical slot where the key is inserted vs. a horizontal slot for later years. 1960 utilized a six wire turn signal switch. As mentioned, 1960 was the last year of the 36hp engine with one-piece case and generator stand. It was also the last year of the non-synchro first gear split case transaxle, which used a thicker shifter. Also, 1960 used a one-year only front trans mount. 1960 was the first year of the horn-ring steering wheel (although not interchangeable with '62 and later steering wheels). It's a great car. I have owned 5 currently own a 60 US beetle. 'll throw some questions/notes out to help seller and buyer alike:\r\n- Always amazes me how so much time can be spend on bodywork/paint prep including the interior but the prep does not include removing light switch, lock assy screws, taping the door limit arm. All are easy details to fix now. First thing I look at on a car...\r\n- Heat/Defrost - I see the exhaust heat exchanger tubes are off (in FL makes sense, did the same thing in the summer, as the flaps are not necessarily 100% sealing and often let some heat through). I would always make sure my flaps, cables all worked and found that nearly all heat was shut off, defrost worked great and even in summer, not much heat got thru... SO - are heat exchangers void of any exhaust leaks, all flaps, cables, control arms working?\r\n- Whoever buys this shoudl take some time to go thru the brakes including lubricating the adjusters. Good to see a picture of one drum off (I recently bought one with \"new brakes\"... anything but - rear backing plate loose leaking trans fluid, one leaking wheel cylinder, no clips on hard line to flex line joints, shoe material soaked with fluids, and missing shoe retainer - point is go through the brakes - parts are not expensive, and change the fluid for peace of mind\r\n- Horn... This is a 2 hear horn circuit that have some hard to find parts. Is it still this 2 year circuit and does the horn work? (I may be wrong on the circuit as it is Euro...)\r\n- Turn signals - hard to tell, is it still the 6 wire turn signal circuit?\r\n- Starter - some will note that it is column vs the dash. not a bad thing, not sure if that was original or added. many added, or maybe a dealer option.\r\n- Bolt sticking out of the pan behind the seat. Looks like one per side? Is this for an added seat belt. Whoever ends up getting this, change that so the bolt head is on the bottom and cut the length of the bolt so it is not that long. Just did that on added seat belts on my 60. Think that is a matter of choice and taste, It can be beneficial to the value, This true. In the meantime, to some like me, it tells a story and believe is lovely just the way it is. Although, It is very nice to know it is also an investment and that It can always be Easily corrected to achieve correctness and more value. To make this one (Factory Correct) would be : 1)Mohair headliner, 2) Outer Carpet Kit in tan, as it has the original rubber ones in the middle. 3) A pin stripe cloth material for the seat upholstery. & Done. The rest of the car is all there. All Matching numbers and all original body parts. All original Glass. Vehicle is 61 Years old. Not a restored car but a Refreshed example. Car feels like it would have felt when it was slightly used in 1977. The original speedometer can be seen on page 228. Stamped 5/1960 which is the month and year this car was produced. Speedometer works and no history of ever breaking in the past. The kilometers are believed to be accurate but only the car can tell us now. \n\n Most importantly, it is an investment in fun! You can enjoy it on day *1. It is fully sorted. All Brake components, plugs, fluids, and much more have been sorted before and in preparation of the auction. Ready to Enjoy!
