From what I understand, cylinder count is going to generate a certain sound frequency. This is then augmented by firing order and exhaust. A lot of companies have worked hard to \"pull out\" bad frequencies in 4/6 cylinders via the exhaust whereas when it comes to 8 or more cylinders they are focused on \"amplifying\" the good ones. Again, no expert and a technical explanation would be great, but this is my summation of a basic article (not super technical).
