A standard series II would be a 1600, and I believe a non-syncro 1st gear (don't quote me on that....) and in standard form, quite non-user friendly seats. The series V upgrades make this a lot easier to live with, the seats are adjustable (if all features are functional here) in ways few British cars offered at the time. The 1725cc 5 main bearing engine from the series 5 makes better power even though some say the 1600cc 3 main bearing engine was more free revving. The all syncro transmission is also a very useful upgrade. It's like someone liked the fins but wanted the finless cars features. I have 30+ years experience with series V's and they are very solid British cars, engineered a lot better than the ones form morris garages (I also had a 64 and a 67 MGB). As a grad student in 1979, I did as much work as necessary to keep my '61 running- changed the engine (updated one with oil pressure, bought from a Tiger-owner in east Cleveland) with a 6-ton winch instead of a jack, got a phone call and got back to the car when it was about 4' off the ground. Had a lot of fun getting it back on the deck. Had the Zenith carb linkage come apart one steamy August night in the middle of the Queens-Midtown tunnel.
