At this point, lesser men would have contemplated taking a desk job or claiming bone spurs and sitting out the rest of the conflict (to the point that he could actually sit). A barbed arrow taken in the taint would justifiably slow anyone down a step or two.\r\n\r\nBut Sam Houston was not just any man.\r\n\r\nHe turned to a fellow soldier and calmly asked him to pull the arrow out. The surprised soldier strongly suggested that Sam seek a surgeon because, after all, it was a barbed arrow. In his groin. Sam was in no mood for debate and pulled his sword on the poor lad until his request was honored.\r\n\r\nHouston was compensated for his gallantry by being shot three more times and left for dead on the battlefield. Next morning he was discovered still breathing, put on a litter, and dragged sixty miles to the nearest fort where he was, once again, left for dead.\r\n\r\nAll of this superseded a political career that saw him become the governor of Tennessee, where he beat Ohio congressman William Stanbury nearly to death with his walking stick on the streets of Washington D.C. when being falsely accused of ethical impropriety.\r\n\r\nShortly thereafter, he made his way to a place called Texas where he would have, what most would agree, a substantial impact. He served as President of Texas when it was a country, and then guided it towards statehood in the US of A where he would serve as the new state\u2019s senator.\r\n\r\nAll that to say if ol\u2019 Sam was alive today, there is a greater than zero chance he\u2019d choose this 1957 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL as his daily driver.\r\n\r\nTimeless in design and polished to perfection, even the dark green leather seats look supple enough to swaddle the naughty bits of someone who had once taken one for the team in that general area. The fitted luggage in the boot would be the perfect way to carry not only his dapper wardrobe, but his important papers of state as well.\r\n\r\nSome might argue otherwise due to the fact that, later in life, Sam took for his third wife a 21 year old beauty with whom he then produced eight children. They might suggest an SUV instead. They don\u2019t know Sam.\r\n\r\nNo. Piloting this sweet piece of perfect German engineering is exactly what the man who has the fourth largest city in America named after him would do.\r\n\r\nHis last words were, \u201cTexas, Margaret, Texas\u201d. I contacted Tim in November 2019.....I wanted a white exterior with a blue or tan interior (100% factory, numbers matching). It took Tim almost a whole week to find a white/tan FULL numbers matching(body/engine/trans/diff). I told Tim I wanted a car that looked like it just left the factory in 1960. He delivered 100%. \r\n\r\nI tool delivery June 2020. The car is spectacular.......as good or better than factory. The engine bay is incredible. The interior is perfect. The paint is flawless. I was so impressed I ordered a GW from Tim......it took about 3 days(seemingly impossible task) to find a white/blue 1956 GW. Took delivery April 2021......Bechtel is the best!!! Tim was easy to work with on both cars. I never had the slightest disagreement or issue.......not typical when going thru 2 car restorations. Most of the time, horror stories during restorations.\r\n\r\n\r\nThis car deviated from the factory ( reversible if one wanted factory)but the bidders can be assured, the mechanicals, interior and paint are beyond impressive-----it's a Bechtel.\r\n\r\nI'm not related to Tim nor on the payroll. I'm just a Porsche 912 guy but inherited some 190SL carbs once. Never been intimidated by any carb before, but I was with these. \r\nI guess Porsche did the same thing with the early 911's- just put those cheap Lancia carbs on the 911 because they worked better, or possibly less troublesome? \r\nI would have thought the stock setup with the large muffled OE air cleaner the better choice, but he very fact that Bechtel chose this setup says something.
