On that car you would row through the gears and when approaching highway speed in third gear you would simply let up on the gas and it would slip into overdrive. You would feel the gear ratio change and the revs drop and be in for some relaxed cruising. I can\u2019t remember if it shifted out of overdrive on its own, but there was a pull knob under the dash to lock it out. Looks like this one has the knob just to the left of the steering column under the dash. Once understanding on how to operate they actually are quite useful.\r\nShifting into overdrive is easy, with the overdrive handle \"in\" simply let off the accelerator briefly at any speed above approximately 27 MPH. The overdrive will then disengage by flooring the accelerator or slowing down to about 20 MPH. \r\nOne important note; unless the overdrive is locked out the transmission will freewheel meaning there is no engine braking. To lock out the overdrive while moving you must momentarily floor the accelerator to ensure the transmission is out of overdrive and at the same time pull out the overdrive handle. The freewheel feature also will not prevent the car from rolling forward when parked so it is important to lock out the overdrive with the handle or shift into reverse. My friend was frequently able to get a hold of the Fairlane with his parents\u2019 permission. Like several of my fellow students in the local high school, he took his parents\u2019 Fairlane to the local drag strip and seriously abused it time after time without any apparent effect on its family usefulness. As far as I know, his parents never discovered the race history of the family car.\r\nOn one occasion which is indelibly fixed in my mind three or four of us were riding in the Fairlane on a hot Ohio summer day with all the windows rolled down. In conformity with our normal recidivist behavior we were driving on a country road with no particular place to go (as Chuck Berry would say). I was riding shotgun and was in possession of a sack of cherry bombs. As we drove I would light the cherry bombs from my cigarette and toss them out the window for our collective amusement. On about the third or fourth effort, I misjudged the trajectory and the cherry bomb hit the top of the door frame and bounced back into the car, landing on the front seat between me and my friend who was driving. I briefly considered trying to grab the cherry bomb and throw it out the window but since my cousin lost two or three of his fingers when a silver tube blew up his hand, I figured that would be a losing proposition. My only course of action was to scoot as far away from the center of the car as possible, squeezing up against the door. My friend tried to do the same on the other side of the car while still driving. \r\nThe cherry bomb exploded on the seat with a tremendous report rendering us both briefly deaf. There was an enormous flash and the entire front of the car filled up with acrid smoke, leaving a big scorch mark on the vinyl seat between us - but we all survived. That afternoon we spent some time with household cleaners removing the scorching damage from the seat - our efforts were 100% successful and my friend\u2019s parents never learned of my transgression - a testament to the durability of 1960s vinyl upholstery. The '62 Fairlane established the mid-sized category as the compact market started to flare out. The '63 received some detail design tweaks and to me was the best looking of the '62-'65 Fairlanes. This is a really nice example of a car that was once very common. \nThe Chevelle and the mid-sized versions of former Buick, Olds and Pontiac compacts arrived in '64. GM gave their mid-sized cars a sporty character that Ford did not really manage -- but Ford had plenty of success with the Mustang at the same time. Chrysler refashioned its '62-'64 trimmed-down full size cars into intermediates for '65. Ford fielded a Mercury version of the Fairlane, the Meteor, in '63 and '64. Studebaker and Rambler had cars that were effectively mid-sized from '62 and '63, but the Stude was yet another rework of the 1953 model and no one really cared. Everyone was jumping in, and the mid-sized category became very important through the 1980s. \nIt's cool that this Fairlane has the little 260 V8 and overdrive. It's a great combination. Studebaker, Rambler, Ford & GM were still into overdrive at this time, as others have noted. It provided better fuel mileage and a quieter, more relaxed ride on long trips. Dad sold our two 57 Chevys when we moved to Carbondale, Illinois and bought the Ford as a replacement. He added vinyl seat covers front and rear, plus seat belts from Montgomery Ward. Years later I learned to drive in this car, mastering the shifter by going up/down our driveway at age 14. We moved back to the Southeast in the mid 60's, so we fried on those seat covers for years. When Dad sold the car in '73, he pulled the seat covers off. The seats looked and smelled like new! The old guy who bought it for $325 said he was going to use it as \"his fishing car\". We suffered all those years on those seat covers so that some guy could plop dead fish on the seats.
