He liked the dark gold car pictured in the brochure, and so he ordered that color. The brochure version showed it with a Houndstooth Check vinyl top, but Bruce chose a regular brown vinyl roof instead. He enjoyed his XR7 for four years and then lost it in an accident. \r\nOver the years, Bruce and his wife would attend car shows, and he\u2019d look for Cougars. He says \u201cThere just weren\u2019t many out there\u201d. \r\nIn 2007 on his 60th birthday, his wife surprised him with this 1970 XR7 Cougar in pastel yellow with brown leather, which she found in Charlotte, North Carolina. \r\nShe had acquired it from the original owner, who\u2019d bought it brand new in 1970, as a retirement gift for himself. He owned it for 37 years, carefully preserving it over the years. When Bruce\u2019s wife found the car, the original owner was 98 years old. \r\nWhen Bruce received the XR7 from his wife, the odometer read 55,000 miles, but was inoperative. Bruce says \u201cI messed up\u201d, because at the DMV he told them the odometer was not working, and the result was a title which said 155,000 miles. He later realized that was a mistake, and says he always knew it did not have that many miles. \r\nThere are many aspects of the condition of the car which support it having low mileage.
