I had a set of Prodrive GC06H in British gold shipped from Japan for it. The only set in the US. They're still on a Subaru just like the one for sale in Detorit, where I lived. I so,d them to a buddy. \n\nIt's relatively easy to tell if these cars have been modified. The first thing that usually goes is the heat shield or the intake snorkel in the fender that mutes the intake sound. Most guys ditch it - like giving birth through the passenger front fender loner. The heat shield is a pain and fits almost no aftermarket down pipes, which are what wakes the car up fastest.\n\nEasy to check. Check the stock headers for plugs where an EGT was tapped in. Check the clock binnacle on the dash for signs of removal - three gauge pod fits in the stock clock locale and is a popular spot. Check the color of the brake calipers. If they're still nice a gold, they weren't cooked on track (or were repainted). I could go on and on.\n\nI love these cars. The idiot's guide to performance driving, much like the Evo. And aside from Aspen White, this is the color to have in my opinion. I wanted a steel gray metallic car, an 06 only color, but went with WRB because it was available. I kind of regret doing so sometimes because the power is really too much for fun commuting but that is a different topic.\n\nWeaknesses of these models:\n\nRinglands are the most common way to loose an engine. This most commonly occurs with modded cars when the tune leans out. My car seems to be just fine with around 40k running a light stage 3 setup (bigger but not huge turbo, spearco top mount intercooler, injectors, fuel pump, full catted exhaust, etc.). For what it's worth, it was not totally uncommon for even stock cars to loose ringlands but last I read about this the thinking seemed to be that this was related to fuel economy related tune changes that mainly impacted the '07 model year. There were some theories about differences in the piston manufacturing over the years, although I don't think it was ever proven. In the worst case, a new shortblock is not prohibitively expensive and/or a new upgraded shortblock is also fairly reasonable.\n\nThe second most common failure mode are the rod bearings. I believe this tends to occur from some combination of fuel dilution, poor oil maintenance, low oil, etc. On a well cared for vehicle, I don't believe it should be an issue.\n\nThe third concern that I can point out is that there is/was some excitement about the brazed oil pickup tube, which was prone to random failure resulting in oil starvation. I've never done anything about this part on my own car. No idea how common is this issue but it was talked about extensively on the Subaru forums for years.\n\nUnlike the base WRX, the 6 speed in the STI is extremely stout. I am not sure that I have personally heard of anyone blowing up a transmission but I don't doubt that it has happened. This should really not be a concern. Frankly, the drivetrain is pretty stout and not a cause for any real worry even with modded vehicles.\n\nI'd say the suspension may be a weakness for some. The rear struts are an inverted design and they are plagued with so-called strut clunk or stiction. It is quite annoying and caused by an internal lubrication issue within the strut. My biggest issue is that there aren't a lot of great aftermarket solutions for the suspension other than coilovers. I have never ran coilovers on my car because the good ones are pretty expensive (start at 2k-2.5k) and I am suspicious of the long term durability/maintenance for long term use. As a soon to be 40 year old, I sometimes long for a nicer ride quality, particularly over undulating high speed roads where the rear end tends to oscillate a bit. Overall, handling is very good for spirited driving but, from my own recollection, not as precise as an EVO. On the other hand, the steering is MUCH less twitchy on the highway, which makes for easier cruising.\n\nThe paint quality on these cars tends to be poor. The interior quality is fairly low, certainly compared to newer cars. Reliability, at least for me, has been good. Knock on wood, the car has never broken down. From memory, the issues of note that I have had are as follows:\n\n1. First and only visit to dealer to replace rear struts under warranty for strut clunk.\n2. Ran into issues bleeding the brembos where two bleed screws stripped. This is very common.\n3. Fuel vapor issues during cold weather due to weak hose clamps. There was a recall for some other models but not the STI unfortunately.\n4. Pulleys are prone to premature wear/failure depending upon the conditions you drive in. Mine are currently a bit noisy and I'll have them replaced soon for 2nd time but you can quiet them for a while with a shot of liquid wrench into the center of the pulley.\n5. My cruise control doesn't seem to really work anymore, not that I really ever used it anyway. Seems to be some kind of electrical issue or switch issue. Haven't diagnosed the issue since I don't use CC.\n6. Air conditioning failed about 3 or 4 years ago. Recharge helped for a while. Needs fixing again.
