They have great looking lines, they have powerful engines and they have a terrific suspension. When new they were considerably less expensive than their rivals from Europe and out performed most of them if not all, especially in sales. They are easy cars to work on and easy to upgrade. They do have a couple of issues, they are prone to rust and a lot of these cars rusted to the point of uselessness and in my opinion, the brakes are not good enough. The car will outrun the brakes, which can lead to some exciting times that may require a tow truck. Brakes can be upgraded! Lately we've seen the prices for good examples go very high considering what they sold for not so long ago, but good examples are hard to come by. This brown example appears to have been taken care of, very little body damage and a nice interior make for a vary acceptable car. Unfortunately for most it is an automatic, that brings the fun factor down, but that can also be changed. A no reserve auction means that it will be sold at what the market will bear and not the owners idea of worth, the two don't always match up. So let the buyer beware, it is a used car and with the history of these cars it should receive an inspection before purchase. It is a sweet looking old Z, best of luck with the sale.\n\nPS: My 280Z would not only outrun my 944, it would also out handle that kraut can! Compared to our previous '71 240, the newer car is such a joy to own as an occasionally-driven classic. Doesn't matter if the car has sat for one day or one month, it fires right up, every time. Never so much as a hiccup from the cold start to wringing the thing out on a hot day. Amazing. \n\nYes, the automatic takes the fun away a bit. However, it's a really nice automatic, made by a consortium of Japanese manufacturers under the name Jatco (Japan Automatic Transmission Company), and licensed from a Borg-Warner design. If anyone remembers how satisfying a THM350 or C4 shifted when set up with a B&M shift kit back in the day, this one behaves exactly like that. It won't quite \"chirp\" the rear tires on the full-throttle 1-2 shift, but it's darn close. Nice and firm, but shifts quite gently when just cruising around. As automatics go, it's quite a delight. \n\nFinding our car with only 28,000 California miles on it in 2004, the plan was always to eventually put a 5-speed manual in it, which our Z specialist mechanic says is a breeze, assuming you're okay with a slight trimming of the floor sheet metal and the $$$ doesn't bother you. DIY would obviously negate the latter part. But this thing shifts so beautifully, and with still under 50K on the odometer, probably won't be failing anytime soon. Also, as a tall fella (36\" inseam) , I recently came to the realization that that my left leg would have a devil of time working a clutch pedal and clearing the steering wheel. Yes, a smaller wheel could be fitted, but the old \"slippery slope\" then comes into play on a very stock example of the car. Probably just going to leave it alone. \n\nThose black bumper surrounds are almost always cracked. Last time I checked, Motorsport (the leader in Z-car stuff in the U.S.) didn't offer them as reproductions, and any NOS parts are long gone. I've just learned to ignore them, and keep them nicely detailed. \n\nWill be watching this one, of course!
