I've had cars that somebody tried to make in to something it isn't; rarely goes well. As cool as the \"shorter\" or \"Euro\" car-colored bumper cars are, I've always thought that these were very cool if not just a bit more old school sophisticated vs the newer boy-racer look. I love how the bumpers tie in with the chrome window trim and brightwork along with the antenna. If you look closely at the older pictures further down, you'll see the old antenna was black. Not fitting with the theme. I've also seen where people have tried to black out the chrome trim to make it look newer; again, not pretty. I too hope the new owner will appreciate it for what it is.\n\n@mcm185, I'm not a big fan of loosening anything really, but specifically interior trim that is very original and staying put right where it should be. I have 2 other E30s, 1 newer, and 1 older. Neither has an interior this together and fresh. Every part of this car is so original and clean that I hate to disturb it. I was only able to show how solid and tidy the under rear seat area is because when they re-did the interior, it comes right out. I own one of these cars. It's my last stand against the overly complex computerized cars of the 21st Century. The Motronics engine management system is the last ems that can be diagnosed and repaired by the home mechanic. Simplicity is valuable when things go wrong.\n\nWhen set up correctly, these E30s have beautiful braking and handling. They have silky smooth acceleration and a very nice power band. If you want massive horsepower, this car isn't for you, but it has power that you can use. It is also a very nice quality car that's comfortable for trips. \n\nYou can see that this car has seen winter salt, but the damage appears to be somewhat contained. No signs of leaky rear main seal. The car is still worth attention, but rust is a killer of these beautiful cars. It still has the original radio, which is a good sign. \n\nIt also has the original sway bars. I replaced mine with Eibachs for better handling. It probably also has original brake hoses, which should be replaced. New Bilstein shocks & struts are worth the time & effort. The color is very pretty. \n\nYou can sink a lot of money into restoration of these old cars, but their worth it. They have classic looks while delivering modern drivability. I bought it from a mechanic and his wife in central Vermont. It was her car, and was garaged and babied. It was in remarkably good unrestored original survivor condition when I bought it, with the \"is\"-specific bits still intact. The only rust spot on the car was a very small one at the lower corner of the left front fender, and it sounds like the seller has remediated that. I prophylactically replaced the timing belt and water pump and rejuvenated the a/c, but mechanically, the car needed little else. I only sold it because a) I needed the money, and b) I knew that I needed to sell it before I fell in love with it and reached the point where I couldn't sell it. I have no skin in the game with this sale whatsoever. My only regret is having to now watch it sell for much more :^) \r\n\r\nQuick story: After I sold it, I didn't hear from the seller for about a month. Finally, he called me and said \"I bet you're wondering what I have to say about the car.\" He then gave me a lengthy explanation on how the car was filthy when it arrived (it was shipped open transport; his choice, not mine), he spent weeks cleaning it), and it took him a while to reach the point of driving it. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. Finally, he said \"This car is WAY better than I expected. You really under-represented its condition.\" Under-promise and over-deliver. The suspension \"upgrade\" was going to be one of the first mechanical items addressed along with a couple of small items that the ilustrious PO mentioned to me. Once my shop got in to the car, they found a few other marginal items that I just told them to address. It took longer than expected to get the parts and work it back in so I just took it back as I was itching to drive it. After having the new Vredesteins put on, I was stunned how well it drove and held the road on the stock suspension so I left it alone. \n \n Funny you mention the rear main. Siegel mentioned some oil dampness in that area but it wasn't fresh and never leaked. As soon as I got the car clean and drivable, we had a severe cold snap which caused the \"dampness\" to evolve in to a sizable puddle. I feared the worst (rear main seal) and took it back to my shop. Shockingly, it was only the valve cover gasket which I had them replace along with the plugs and valve adjustment. Even being a life-long car guy, I had no Idea that much oil could come from a simple valve cover gasket. These fall in a nice sweet spot for classic car lovers because they are still so damn analog, easy to work on, cheap to own, and fun to drive. And yet if you are used to driving something older, like a 70s BMW 2002 - these feel truly modern. Air conditioning that blows really cold, power sunroof, power windows, a radio you can hear over the engine, 5 gears, comfortable seats, heated seats (optional), decent power/torque, etc. It was like night and day when switching cars between my 2002 and E30. The E30 was my DD for 3 seasons, except winter. Speaking of winter, these cars are such much more rust worthy than a 2002. Again, not saying these are better than a 2002 (after all I sold the E30, but my 2002 is a keeper for me), but so much more modern feeling, yet classic. \n\nHaving said all that, these are truly do anything cars. Great for spirited driving, autocross, and HPDE... in addition to normal family duties. The hydraulic steering rack is wonderful and you get that feel that you are connected to the road. Also, if you like a sleeper - the 325is is a car that most people think you are driving because you have to, when you really drive it because you want to. \n\nBetween the Hack and this seller, it looks like this car has been mostly sorted out. I see the antenna was replaced - but did you put the stock antenna gasket over it. When I had the interior re-done, I had them fabricate another leather shift knob boot as it is separate from the boot that clips to the console, which I also replaced with an OEM BMW piece as it was still available. Once they pulled off the old tattered leather from the knob, the newly fabricated leather sleeve was too thick to fit between the outer knob and the shift-pattern-ring which crazily wouldn't come out. For the sake of stickler originality (which @Nader so eloquently described), I had them just leave it intact and fashion the leather around it the best they could. What you see is the result of hours of handling and cursing::--)) At first I didn't like it as it is bigger inside the palm than before. But the more I drive with it, the more I like it. I have several other knobs that I interchange from drive to drive, but keep going back to this original one. Sorry for the long story. \n\nFYI, I had them fabricate several other leather sleeves while they were at it as I have other E30s and I wanted to keep my options open. The E30s #s on paper pale in comparison to any of the afore mentioned and certainly with your current stable. I've found this car to be more rewarding to drive than any other BMW I've owned. The one word that best describes E30s is balance. That's what BMW has always been known for, versus raw horsepower from the likes of Mercedes and others. BMW has always done more with less when it comes to horsepower; and the E30s are the epitome of that statement. The E30s are much more connected and direct than any BMW that came after; I think you could say that about any car line or model that's been continuously produced. \n\n I've never driven a Z car, but you could draw the same analogy with newer Nissans. I also have a 76' Alfa Spider and a 74' Alfa GTV which would be more in line with your Z car. The IS is certainly more refined and polished compared to the driving experience of those 2 cars, but still engaging and, again, direct. \n\n And, yes, the suspension is sorted, confidence inspiring, and can perform as pictured and described as is. If you were going to do some auto crossing or track duty, you might want to go with what some have suggested; Bilsteins and Eibachs. As a daily driver, I would leave it exactly as it is.
