It has covered just shy of 25,000 original miles from new. The records and continuous 60-year ownership of the first owner are impeccably documented in a manner and way I have never seen before.\r\n\r\nIt is of course completely matching numbers, rust and accident free retaining 100% of its original alloy body, engine, gearbox and all other individually identified and numbered components. The original AC Cars Ltd., internal assembly records remain with the vehicle as do the original sales invoices and all records and correspondences going back to new.\r\n\r\nThis rare AC Roadster came my way as a result of the sale the sale of a friend's Alpine A110 1600S a few months ago. One of the bidders also lives not far from me here on the New Hampshire SeaCoast and during his inspections of the Alpine, he mentioned he had a very special AC Ace Roadster. He was clearly being humble in describing the car and did not indicate in anyway just how special it really was.\r\n\r\nThere will be plenty of time to share full details and I will be posting the restoration receipts and records shortly as well. Another 466 examples were completed with the 2.0-liter, Bristol 100D inline, six-cylinder engine.\r\n\r\nDomestic production AC models with the AC engine used an \u201cAE\u201d prefix, while Bristol engined examples used a \u201cBE\u201d prefix. Export models were either \u201cAEX\u201d or \u201cBEX.\u201d Both versions could be had configured in the original right-hand-drive configuration or left-hand-drive, usually seen on the majority of the exported version.\r\n\r\nAEX 476 was completed in left hand drive configuration for export in 1958. The officially recorded date of completion in the AC Cars LTD., records was July 24th, 1958. The AC records confirm that the car was completed in \u201cLight Yellow\u201d with black leather interior and it had a black soft top and tonneau cover. The records also incorrectly identify the car as an \"AC Ace Bristol\u201d with the engine number \u201cCL 2370 W\u201d which is correct and this is an Ace engine number and not a \u201cBristol\u201d engine number so the listing of the car as a \"Ace-Bristol\u201d is just a recording error in the original records.\r\n\r\nUpon completion it was shipped to AC Imports Inc., of Arlington, Virginia and then subcontracted for sale to the official AC Cars Limited Agency, DH Automotive, Foreign Car Sales & Service in Concord New Hampshire. The AC records contain another typographical error, recording the original owner as \u201cRichard W. Waire\u201d rather than \"Richard W. Waite.\u201d \r\n\r\nThe main building and parking lots of DH Automotive, Foreign Car Sales & Service still exist and are now a Sherwin Williams Paint outlet. The owner, J. (Dick) Waite of 35 Mountwood Road, Swampscott, MA. The list price was $4,695. Mr. Waite traded in a 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spyder valued at $3000 ad he paid a difference of $1,695. It would remain with him for the next 60 years, covering just shy of 25K original miles in that time frame.\r\n\r\nMr. Waite was a long-term resident of Topsfield, Massachusetts and an avid sports car enthusiast. He was a lifetime member of the Sports Car Club of America and rallied and raced in his youth and well into his 70s! After an honorable discharge in the Army, he acquired a 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spyder and traded it up to acquire this AC Ace Roadster. \r\n\r\nSo far I have not been able to find any individual records of Mr. Waite racing his treasured AC Roadster, however his massive trove of receipts and correspondences repeatedly state that he rallied and raced the car in the early 1960s. \r\n\r\nMr. Waite frequently crewed for his friend Luigi Chinetti\u2019s North American Race Team and other cars sold by his friend J. Hallinan via his D & H Foreign Motors dealership. He crewed at various events on the East Coast including a rather famous outing at Sebring in 1963 where he infamously was assisting the NART Sunbeam Harrington Alpine on its 4th in Class and 36th Overall finish. During a pit stop, Mr. Waite did not wait for an official to remove the fuel fill retaining wire and in a moment of enthusiasm, he ripped the entire fill pipe out. The team patched it up with duct tape but it leaked fuel for the rest of the race forcing Masten Gregory to spin out in his low-drag E-Type. \r\n\r\nAt the age of 57, he ran the Mt. Washington Hill Climb on June 23-25th, 1995 where he finished 42nd in his MG Special. It had been off the road since the 1980's. The usual story: owner thought he would get to it at some point. I bought it with 2 engines and a lot of spare parts. The engine in the car was not original but was from an AC-Ace that ran at Sebring in 1956. I sold that engine but had the original, numbers matching engine completely rebuilt by Competition Motors in Portsmouth and reinstalled in the car.\r\n\r\nThe car underwent complete refurbishment with all new paint (original color yellow). I did not have the interior redone except for floor mats and some insulation (the seat leather was reconditioned and has nice patina). All the running gear was either replaced or restored. My goal for the car was to keep it as original as possible so everything is there including the original tonneau, soft top and side curtains.\r\n\r\nThe car runs perfectly and sounds terrific. The quick answer is the engine, gearbox, and all the mechanics of the car were completely restored and they are perfect in all regards. The only mechanical issue is a nonoperative clock which was originally lubricated by whale oil and it is gummed up and dirty and no attempt to restore it has been made.\r\n\r\nIf one were so inclined, seeing how hard it would be to get whale oil unless you live on the New Jersey seashore, a better lubricant is powdered graphite which can be gotten easily in any hobby shop as the most common use is on pinewood derby cars for the scouts.\r\n\r\nNow for a bit more of an involved answer on what Mr. Waite experienced. In his correspondence and records he always had problem with a slipping clutch and tried to remedy this on many occasions. He over thought and over engineered what should have been the simplest solution. The problem was not the clutch but where it was located in relationship to the design of the original AC Ace, two-liter engine. The Ace engine is a pre-war design and like many pre-war cars, it was a long-stroke, ultra-high torque power plant that needed few revs to make gobs of useful torque right off the line as soon as the gas pedal was pushed.\r\n\r\nThe engine\u2019s rear main seal used a \u201cslinger-type\u201d seal, or simply a set of machined spirals that when the crank was spinning, would pump oil back into the engine. The system is very simplistic and means no need to replace any type of mechanical seal but it also means if you overfill the engine sump with oil, and the car is not running oil will drain out past the slinger groves on the crankshaft and the oil will drain out until it goes to the correct level.\r\n\r\nThis has the effect of always spraying oil on the clutch and Mr. Waite, as the attentive engineer that he was, likely ran a half a quart or so of extra oil thinking more would be better but not realizing that he was getting oil on his clutch which would make it slip at higher RPM.\r\n\r\nThe owners manual points out, never to overfill the engine sump and had he followed the guidelines from AC he would have found the simplest of fixes.\r\n\r\nAs often told, collectors favor the Bristol engined variants as they are very rev-happy and make their useful torque higher in the RPM range. Over time however, collectors realized that the Ace engined variants always have a thin coating of oil on the bottom side of the car which kept them corrosion free.\r\n\r\nWhile the two different engine versions look identical form the outside, they have a distinctly different feel when driven. It also has almost no flywheel effect and spins easily and quickly to high rpm where it makes its useful torque and maximum bhp!\r\n\r\nThe Ace engine probably has at least 100lb more weight that the Bristol engine and the car feels much more like an early 260 cubic inch cobra. The long-stroke, high-torque motor meaning very few rpms are needed and with a large and heavy flywheel, you can pull tree stumps in any gear immediately after stepping on the gas pedal.\r\n\r\nThis Ace Roadster is a much easier car for me to drive in and around where I live on the short twisty roads and along the flowing coastline nearby. No doubt you would love the gobs of low end, lazy-torque and self-centering steering attitude of the Ace and while you can go faster and quicker above legal road speed limits, you won\u2019t be unhappy in the least with the low RPM, high-speed attitude of the Ace at anytime. Think of it more along the performance lines and handling as an 260 cubic inch, AC Cobra without the ability to speed past the magic 100mph marque.\r\n\r\n@Plenkov, I know you have been on the hunt for one of these for quite sometime and I cannot stress enough that to find a better example could take many, many years and more than twice the likely high bid. But to be honest, I doubt such an example exists.\r\n\r\nYour comments and observations are appreciated @spencer but I don\u2019t know many that have pushed both a Bristol and and Ace-engined example harder through some undulating hills, heavy sweeping turns and quite a few decreasing, off-camber hill-turns recently than myself.\r\n\r\nI have pushed both to and just beyond their limits, done some rapid throttle lifts and opposite lock powering through the turns and could not get either variant to misbehave. In the past, I have encountered a few examples with worn front steering units that give a tight steering wheel in a straight line and got ultra-sloppy as soon as the wheel is turned right and left and that can be frightening but I have never been disappointed by the suspension travel, bounce and rebound on any AC Ace Roadster variant.\r\n\r\nI would go one step further in that I know several occasional, not very experienced drivers that found their AC Aces to be the perfect starting point to historic racing and spirited touring events. One client in particular joined us in the late 1990s at the Mille Miglia in a borrowed AC Ace and with no experience, he and his daughter had the time of their lives. She did much of the driving and had previously never driven a right hand drive car or a manual gearbox vehicle before.\r\n\r\nVery kind of @69Ghibli, @Tyracious and @Woody to share such kind comments and observations! There were two layers light yellow paint and the bottom layer was the original grey primer. Not one bit of the body needed repairs or metal finishing. The car was completely accident free!\r\n\r\nAs mentioned previously there were three updates for convenience and safety. A set of 3-inch lap belts were installed and a thermostatically controlled electric fan was fitted. I posted in the last video the original numbered keys and close up photos of the tumblers showing the matching numbers for each. (See photos 320 through 323 and photo 339.) Even the often lost \u201cT\u201d tool for the bonnet latches is an original and not a made up one. (Photo 338) Note the two-piece construction and machined square end and with the small concentric and reduced machined circles at each end of the separate handle.\r\n\r\nTypically what I usually come across is a made up bonnet tool or worse just a screwdriver that will fit the square hinge hole. lI am attaching a photo of a typical example of what I usually find on most the the AC Ace Roadsters I have encountered. Most are nicely machined and work well but hardly original to the cars as delivered new by AC Cars Ltd.\r\n\r\nNo doubt you know a good deal better than most and as the \u201cshark\u201d that you are @aleventhal, you smell blood in the water and are hoping for a steal of a deal. Only some weeks ago the Ace-Bristol offered by @seller went up substantionally during the last part of the auction.\nThe other thing is, how much more is an example worth to someone compared to a similar car which is in very good condition and not messed with but not so original as this one and certainly not accompanied by an archive as with AEX476. You are not only buying a car but 60+ years of archive accumulated by the original owner.\nHow much is this worth extra? Difficult to say as there is not much to compare it to. As always, it is a question of supply and demand. Supply is almost not existent as good luck finding a similar car unless you are prepared to search and wait for quite some time. Even then, it is uncertain to find a similar example. I am astounded by the large amount of money spent on a car that was very good to start with but needed refreshing which always turns out more extensive and expensive than you imagine. One thing leads to another and the $$$ mount up before you realize it, especially if most of the work or everything is outsourced. Still, I think it is a BIG amount. I have just finished the last inspection and do not anticipate anyone else coming later today before the auction ends.\r\n\r\nAbsolutely nothing in any of the test drives, inspections and evaluations over the past two weeks has shown any issue or problem of any kind other than the non-operative clock.\r\n\r\nI am posting a photo now of the current odometer taken a few minutes ago showing total mileage of 24,989 miles form new. Total mileage since the completion of the restoration and preservation program is approximately 250.\r\n\r\nI and the others that came to drive the car have added an approximate 100 trouble free and incredibly fun miles during my short care of the car. I was thinking we might get to the magic 25K mile mark, but that will be the treat for the fortunate new owner later today!\r\n\r\nI am happy to try and get any additional last minute photos as needed and remain here to assist in anyway.\r\n\r\nAt the conclusion of the auction, the car can remain here, stored safely indoors until it can be collected. If longer storage is needed, I can assist with a private off site storage location as needed.
