It was essentially two TR7 engines mated together (cast iron block w/ aluminum heads). The Triumph engine suffered many problems - it was particularly prone to overheating and warping of the heads if the coolant level was not perfect. The Stag is a gorgeous car that could have been much more reliable had Triumph simply dropped in the Buick V8 from the start. \r\n\r\nThis TR8, on the other hand, with the carb, cam, and headers, is probably making at least 180-200 hp (compared to the stock 135). For a 1980 vintage car, 200 hp would be outstanding. And it only weighs 2600 lb. I\u2019m sure it is quick for the era. With the stock dual Stromberg carbs these made 140HP. The intake and carb felt like they added 40HP, and with the exhaust upgrades, I would expect close to 200HP in this one. These cars are a real hoot to drive, and handle well to boot. Short wheelbase, light weight, lots of power, 5 speed -- what's not to like?\r\n\r\nThis one is certainly a little rough around the edges, but has all the right mechanical bits. And that 3.5L Buick V8 engine sounded great winding out. \r\n\r\nWinter in Denver however was a different story\u2026.the carb version (1980) was very hard starting in cold weather, no choke plates in those P.O.S carbs and involved lots of cranking. And the oil in the shocks turned to molasses so the only suspension on a cold winter day driving to work was the air in the tires. And the brakes were weak. Scared myself silly coming down from Estes Park one day. \r\n\r\nAs noted below, the stock speedo was Federally mandated 85MPH. This was easily replaced with a 140MPH unit. I lived in the UK and had a rare TR7 Sprint many years ago - Carmine Red. They only made 25 of the Sprints and I think I'm right in saying mine was the first. Registration number was WAC 274S (plates typically stay with the car in the UK, at least they used to) and I think it's still out there somewhere, rusting away. It had a trick exhaust so sounded great and was a ton of fun to drive - you're pretty much sitting on the back axle. Got it into a beautiful opposite-lock, sideways drift by accident trying to make a last-minute turn one day - scared myself to death. The 16-valve Sprint engine was flawed by design so went through head gaskets regularly, but the Buick derive Rover V8 in the TR8 would probably be the most reliable component of the entire car, I would imagine. Rust can be an issue, as can electrical gremlins, and the overall build quality is typical for that disastrous period in UK car manuafacturing history. And this is a car that lived most of its life in L.A. We cut out the affected areas and welded in new metal. \nHere's the cool thing...the spare tire well repair is invisible. My body man went to the scrapyard and found that the shape of the metal for the bed of a Chevy S-10 is a perfect match for the TR. He grafted in the patch and you can't tell.\nThese are great cars, and this is an excellent candidate for a top-flight restoration. No tracking down impossible to find parts. And personally my favorite was a 1980 TR7 Spider (Spyder), as special edition black TR7 convertible with fuel injection. \r\nI never had to do any ECU repairs on any TR7 with fuel injection, never, none, zero... not even one!\r\nBut had two repair two TR8's ECU's that had fuel injection. So I would be willing to bet that the ECU for TR8's were manufactured from a different source then those for TR7. As the TR7's ECU's were bullet proof in my experience. And for the injection parts for the TR7's, I would visit my local BMW dealership because most parts were all Bosch and used by many manufactures like BMW, Saab, Volvo... so very easy to get parts for.\r\nThe TR8 ECU's had to be re-soldered, and it was not that difficult a task to perform. In a quick scan of my work area, I cant find the document that I had printed years ago about how to do the repair, but am willing to be it's very easy to find on the web.\r\nSo the question about which is better for a street driven TR8 is kinda of hard to answer.\r\nEven though I loved the wedges, as they are very inexpensive (even the rare 8's are not pricey at all, and 7's you can get for near nothing or for free, and I even had people pay me to remove some 7's from their yards). I think if you are looking at squeaking out maximum performance, the carbed 8 would be the way to go... but if you want a car that is more dependable (excuse me again for using dependable with wedge) then I'd opt for Fuel Injection. Just a side note, I know that the two 8's that I repaired the ECU's on lived long and almost happy lifes one of their lifes ended after being rear ended by a truck and another was sold and went over seas, so I don't know it's eventual fate, but it lived in the states for another 20 years and was still running when it went back home across the pond. \r\nPoint being, once the ECU on the TR8's get resoldered then seem to live on quite happily.\r\nKind of a love / hate relationship with wedges, I love the way they look and handle especially when you consider how old they are and how affordable they are, very hard to beat the cost factor. Down side is Lucas... any car with Lucas components will break down, guaranteed positively.\r\nBest TR7 I've ever have had the pleasure of seeing and driving was a TR7-8 The owner, a great mechanic swapped out the entire drive train and electrical with GM parts and Delco.\r\nCar had balls, was a daily driver, was fast as hell and looked totally stock except for exhaust and best part was, it never broke down in the 15 years that I knew of it. You either love them or hate them. Did I buy too low/too high? It's a moot point to me as I bought it for the same reason that I purchased my E30 M3 years ago. They are a HOOT to drive! An added bonus is that the Wedge Shop tuned the engine and suspension. Woody and the guys are to TR8's what Korman Autoworks is to 2002's.....It should be a blast.....Speaking of 2002's, the seller, Jim Comer is an old school BMW racer....He won the 1974 6 hour race at Road Atlanta driving a 2002 with the Miller & Norburn guys.
