That car consumed the 375 mile trip at extra-legal speeds non-stop and even the Ohio State Police never caught me. I could get into the car fatigued and get out refreshed (the opposite of my 5.0 Mustang GT!). I begrudgingly sold my '91 in 2000 as it approached 150,000 miles because the sunroof button broke. I rarely used the sunroof and reasoned if that switch was worn out, the rest of the Taurus must be too... the Yamahammer certainly wasn't worn out though! I replaced it with a '95 and immediately noticed that Ford's bean counters had cleverly de-contented it... the map pockets were no longer felt lined, the automatic headlights lacked a timer-control... little things, but disappointments none-the-less. These unique engineering masterpieces seem wildly underappreciated. Did a bunch of research on it before I bought it. Yamaha built the engines in Japan and Ford committed to buy either 20,000 a year for 3 years or 20,000 over 3 years. The rev limiter was to protect the a/c compressor and maybe also the power steering pump. The true engine red line was well beyond what the two mentioned components could survive.\r\nThey were awesomely fun cars. When they first came out, after raves from Car and Driver and Road&Track, dealers were getting $5,000 over sticker for the first few month. Unfortunately, even in '89, most drivers wanted an automatic and Ford's FWD automatic at the time couldn't take this engine's output. In just a few months, without the automatic, most of the crazies who wanted a manual had one and they soon went from over sticker to significant discounts.\r\nMy son was 6 when I got mine (after the frenzy). When I saw this car today, I texted my son the listing with the following note \"Mattie, want to go zoom and drive on the Whoa Road?\" (Yes, I was a bad dad an frequently got my SHO on the cam, \"go zoom,\" and on the \"Whoa Road,\" a road with a few whoops. Drove it a lot for business on the highways of western Canada where the wide open vistas encouraged wide open speeds. Seemed to top out about 145 mph. When the 91 came out I sold the 89 that had about 125,000 kms and got a mocha frost with the full load including the JBL sound system like this one has. The 91 was better in various ways with 16 inch wheels instead of 15, better brakes and a better shifter which I think was a later 91 change from the cable shifter. I still have that car with just under 300,000 kms and the engine runs great, only a couple of timing chains and plug changes. The clutch did fail about 200,000 km and it was the release bearing that had seized, the clutch itself still had lots of lining etc. though we replaced the whole package.
