This thing is not in perfect, as-new condition, but boy it is incredibly well preserved for a 38 year old family sedan. American Honda began its automobile sales here in 1970, with the tiny N600 and Z600 models. I don't know about you but here in the Midwest I never saw one. When the Civic was introduced to the States in 1973 that was a different story. Great timing with the oil embargo, rising fuel prices and the American public was receptive to a reliable, fuel efficient car.\r\n\r\nBut it wasn't until the Accord was introduced in 1976 that Honda really put America's carmakers on notice. The 'Big' Honda (as it was called) had a lot going for it and changed the North American automobile landscape forever. The 1981 Accord was the final year of production for this first iteration so it benefits from subtle refinements over the course of that first six-year run.\r\n\r\nOne weakness that these (as well as other Japanese and non-Japanese) cars suffered from was rust. \"A nice old Buffalo Honda\" is not something you really hear anymore. Fortunately, as the photographs attest, this California car lived a pampered lifestyle indoors when not in use and only traveled 53k miles from November 1980 through 2006 when its one and only owner decided to turn in her keys. It eventually was sold to another California resident who I bought it from in 2014. The reason I have decided to part ways with this time capsule is I actually was able to purchase a similar 1981 Accord with only 4,600 miles... so I would rather make room for another classic Honda model that is not already part of my collection. What were his intentions? A sense of adventure must have seized the young couple as well, as they were now transfixed by this stranger, and made no attempt to hurry away.\r\n\r\nThey reached their vehicle and stopped, turning around to see what the stranger would do. One of them, in a rather impulsive moment, opened the rear door of this 4 door Honda, invitingly. Surely not expecting this total stranger to continue to come forward and accept an impromptu invitation.\r\n\r\nThe stranger paused ever so slightly, then leapt into the inviting cloth back seat with as daring a move as the original invitation was.\r\n\r\nThe following day, Children (I\u2019ll call them me and my older brother) were picked up at Dad\u2019s at the conclusion of the shared custody weekend. The dark haired stranger was still in the back seat. The Children\u2019s curiosity was immediately piqued. Who was this? Black hair, green eyes, tuft of white on his chest. He seemed to ask the same of us? Who are you, round brown eyes, small hands, reaching out to touch me? Are you joining this family too? Indeed, the introductions went well.\r\n\r\nFor the next 16 years, we had our family pet. I\u2019m convinced people only get 1 good cat in their lives. The Berlina was a fun car, but unfortunately seemed to require almost annual head gasket replacements during my four years of ownership. So, it was time for me to give the Japanese a try. The one I got had beige/tan like this car, although the 1980 beige was a little darker than the '81 on this car. I still have the original window sticker (pack rat), showing an MSRP of $6665 with exactly zero options. \r\n\r\nSo, having purchased the reliable Japanese sportyish sedan to replace the less reliable Italian sporty sedan, what happens but that at 18k miles the transmission decides to take a dump and slip out of fifth gear in the reliable Honda. Which was well past the 12k miles warranty of the day. So as a better writer of letters to management than a wrencher of cars, I shoot one off to Honda of NA explaining that their reputation for reliability would begin to look like the Big Three's if they didn't repair my Accord at their expense. They agreed, and we have remained loyal Honda people happily ever after, with currently three Honda cars and three Honda motorcycles in the fam 38 years later. The first car I ever bought new was an Opel 1900 coupe. It was a wonderful car that handled really well and was extremely comfortable on long slogs between New York and Arkansas where I was stationed at the time. It had one small fault. On several occasions it would just stop running for no apparent (to me) reason. After sitting by the road for 10 or 15 minutes it always started right up and exhibited no further problems until many months and miles later when the same thing might happen again.\r\n\r\nI also owned a Mazda GLC that I bought new a few years later while in college. We enjoyed the little Mazda for several years before upgrading to a 626, although it would probably have been more accurate to name the little hatchback Mazda a \"PGLC\", pretty good little car.\r\n\r\nAnd then there is the Honda. I lusted after the first generation Accord after reading glowing reviews in Car and Driver and other auto mags. But Accords were a little more expensive than competitor cars. Although the many standard features made the difference more than worth the difference. Still, it was several years before I could finally afford one, a clapped out 1984 EX five speed in Copper Brown, complete with hatch window slats and \"alloy\" wheels. I only had to pay $200 over list at the tiny dealership in Biloxi, MS. It was a wonderful car that drove like nothing I had ever experienced. It was as nimble and sure footed on the highway as the Opel 1900 but with a bit more torque. We finally traded it in for a \"moon buggy\" Toyota mini-van.\r\n\r\nWhich brings me full circle. A couple years ago I was finally able to fulfill my dream of owning a first generation Accord when a low mileage 1979 5 speed LX turned up on Craigs List. The 40 year old car is still a pleasure to drive and we take it out often.
